Another great day for Britain began well in the sailing. Paul Goodison ended the laser race to take Britain’s 13th gold of the games. The 30 year old from Sheffield was overjoyed at attaining Britain’s 3rd sailing gold of the games.

Chris Hoy also became a British cycling legend today as he won his third gold of the games, the first Briton to do so for 100 years. He beat his 20 year old team-mate Jason Kenny in the final. Chris Hoy will now have the Scottish commonwealth games velodrome named after him in tribute.

Victoria Pendleton also won her sprint final on the track against Australian Anna Meares. It was Britain’s sixth cycling gold of this games. In the same event China’s Guo Shuang was denied entry to the final after a clash with silver medallist Anna Meares after their semi-final. However she won her bronze medal match against Willy Kansis.

The athletics team also got in on the act today. Germaine Mason won a silver medal in the high jump to give Britain it’s first track & field medal of the games. The Olympic debutant switched his allegiance from Jamaica in 2006 and was clearly delighted with his medal on his lap of honour.

There was more success in the Bird’s nest for Britain in a thrilling women’s 400m final. Christine Ohuruogu was a way back coming into the home straight but powered home to give Britain a track & field gold. Elsewhere Christian Malcolm qualified for another 200m final 8 years after he last did it in Sydney. However gold already seems destined for Usain Bolt as he once again looked amazingly comfortable in qualifying for the same 200m final to be ran tomorrow.

British men’s boxing had a good day also. Tony Jeffries progressed in his light-heavyweight bout against Hungary’s Imre Szello to guarantee himself at least a bronze.

In the gymnastics there were some familiar faces amongst the medal winners. The two Americans Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin took gold and silver in the women’s beam final. Cheng Fei for China wasn’t far behind them in the bronze medal position. The men’s gymnastics gave China 2 more golds, one for Li Xiaopeng in the parallel cars and Lu Chunlong in the trampolining. Dong dong took the bronze in the same event.

So team GB’s success over the weekend was seemingly not a fluke as further golds today strengthened their position in third. America continued to have more medals than China but less gold so the hosts stayed top of the table.
