Over in Hong Kong the British team tried in vain to catch Australia and Germany but secured the bronze to add to the British medal tally. The only other British medal of the day came in the C1 canoe men's singles as David Florence did a perfect final run to jump to silver after starting the day in 4th. China continued to dominate the diving as the 10m women's synchronised final was won by a sizeable margin by Xin Wang and Roulin Chen. China's impressive showing in the weightlifting also continued. Liao Hui of the 69kg category took gold by a margin of 10kg with a combined total of 348kg. China also took a perhaps unexpected gold in the men's fencing sabre final, with Zhong Man beating France's Nicolas Lopez 15-9. China saw off many competitors, including fierce rivals and Olympic champions Japan, in the Men's team gymnastics to take gold. The gymnastics venue almost at full capacity witnessed a virtually perfect routine from the Chinese team to see them achieve the same result as in 2000. A couple of bronzes also made their way over to the Chinese team today in shooting. Binyuan Hu managed to get the bronze medal in a tough field which also included British former Olympic champion Richard Faulds who finished in 6th. In the 50m men's air pistol Zongliang Tan got the bronze too as he was beaten by two Koreans. Elsewhere in the pool Michael Phelps turned in another startling display in the 200m freestyle. It was his third gold so far and his 3rd world record. Once again China tops the medals table despite the USA having more medals in total; China's 13 gold medals however leave them top of the pile. Meanwhile Britain slipped down to 9th in the pecking order. |

Day four saw more medals and
more drama for the UK and China in today's events. It was an event that wasn't
deciding a medal today that provided great drama. The badminton mixed pair Gail
Emms and Nathan Robertson faced off against the number 2 seed Chinese pair of
Gao Ling and Zheng Bo. Despite being 12-17 down in the final set and in front
of a partisan crowd the British pair came out on top in the end. The 2006 world
champions are now amongst the favourites again in the mixed pairs after their
silver in Athens. In the other China V UK badminton the result was reversed as China's He Hanbin and Yu Yang beat Anthony Clark and Donna
Kellogg. The victors now progress to the quarter final and the British pair
will hope the courageous comeback will give them the momentum to progress
further.
