Britain got their 3rd gold of the games today as the Cycling sprint team beat France in the velodrome. Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy were superb as they were winner over the strong French by 0.5 seconds. Michael Phelps also took his 6th gold of the games in the individual 200m medley breaking his own world record. If he wins in his next race he will equal Mark Spitz record of 7 golds in one games.

It was the first day in the bird's nest too today. Amongst other events the 100m kicked off with the first two rounds. The three favourites all progressed to the semi-finals. Usain Bolt looked incredibly casual as he eased through his heat, as both Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay also progressed. However gold hope Kelly Sotherton will be disappointed with her performance in the heptathlon as she had to settle with third at the end of the first day.

It was medals aplenty in the women's badminton doubles as they took gold and bronze. Both pairs beat neighbouring countries in their respective matches. Yili Wei and Yawen Zhang beat Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna of Japan to take Bronze. Du Jing and Yu Yang defeated Hyojung Lee and Kyungwon Lee to win gold.

The gymnastics provided another medal for the Chinese as Yang Yilin finished behind the two Americans, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, in the women's all round final.

There was an even better result for the host nation in the judo. Tong Wen beat Japan's Maki Tsukada in the dying seconds to take gold in the women's 78kg class.

There were two more golds in the weightlifting for China taking their tally to 8 golds as they continued their fantastic performance in this event. Cao Lei completed a whitewash for China's women in the weightlifting as they have now taken four out of four golds in this event. She broke three Olympic records on her way to winning the 78kg category. Lu Yong claimed gold because of his lighter bodyweight after tying the world record in the 85kg men's category.

In the sailing Ben Ainslie is now assured of at least silver as he leads the Finn class in Qingdao by 12 points. He can only be caught by second placed Zach Railey for tomorrow's medal race.

China remain top of the medals table despite the USA having four more medals in total. However China's 26 gold medals in vastly superior to USA's 14. The cycling team's heroics meant that Britain remained in 10th position with 3 gold medals and 8 in total.
