WOMEN’S VOICES LECTURE Chinese Migrant Women Lecture by Xinran Thursday 12 July at Asia House Doors 6.30pm, Talk 6.45-7.45pm Followed by reception Xinran has become known for her wonderful ability to take readers to the heart of Chinese society and is recognised for her ‘unforgettable insights into the past and present of Chinese women’s lives.’ In her talk, she will discuss her experiences with female migrant workers in China and her latest novel on the subject, Miss Chopsticks. It is an uplifting tale of three sisters, who like so many migrant workers in today’s China, leave their peasant community to seek fortune in the big city. As the Li sisters discover Nanjing, Xinran also uncovers it for her readers: its past, its customs and culture, and its future as a place where people can change their lives.Xinran was born in Beijing in 1958 and was a successful journalist and radio presenter in China. Since moving to London in 1997, she has written a number of bestselling novels, including The Good Women of China, has a regular column in the Guardian and makes frequent public appearances on both radio and TV.
