LECTURE Arranged as part of the Asia House exhibition Modern Chinese Art: Beginnings, this lecture will provide context to the early part of the exhibition, which shows works by refugee artists from the mid 1940s in exile in western China. Rana Mitter, University Lecturer in the History and Politics of Modern China, University of Oxford, will cover the Japanese invasion of China, the civil war that followed, and the changes that came with the arrival of Chairman Mao. CURRENT AFFAIRS LECTURE This lecture will give insight into the tight restraints that television programme-makers face in China today. Peng Wenlan began her career at China Central Television, China's state network, and launched its first current affairs series. She has also worked for the BBC. Currently, she runs her own company specialising in documentary films on China for Western audiences. Tickets £5 for Dimsum readers (normally £8) FORUM Prominent Chinese and British women will come together to share ideas and experiences, and exchange views on the Olympics and its impact on society. The panel discussion will be chaired by Anni Marjoram, Policy Advisor on Women to the Mayor of London. This Forum is presented in association with the All-China Women's Federation. PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION This exhibition will show images of Chinese women today - from women at work to women at play, from city professionals to rural workers.
Images are from the collection of the All-China Women's Federation. Admission free - no booking required.
