Haiti was devastated by a huge earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale this week on the 12th of Jan. Up to three million people live in the area worst hit by the quake centred 10 miles southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. Latest reports are that 40, 000 have been buried and at least 100,000 people are still missing. Men, women, children and babies have all died and the living are seriously vulnerable with no water, no food, no medicine. Many have lost homes and their livelihoods. Essential services have been badly hit.
Actor John Hurt has made a special TV appeal for the DEC and asked the public to give generously so aid agencies can bring medicine, clean water, and other essentials to help get the local people back on their feet. He explained, "This is a huge tragedy that has affected millions of people living in one of the poorest nations in the world"
Councillor Edmond Yeo, JP, the Chair of Chinese Information and Advice Centre is rallying support from the Chinese community, and has asked the community to come out this Sunday to support the appeal, "Let us give what we can afford to help and donate to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti."
DJ Alice, the presenter for Spectrum DAB Radio has also made a personal appeal on the Chinese programme. She explained, "For £25, you can help to supply a kit of household essentials. For £50 you can help to buy a food pack to feed a family for a fortnight. For £100 you can provide temporary shelter for two families."
Please join us this Sunday between 1-3pm when Donation Boxes will be available at major shops and premises around Chinatown. You can also send a cheque payable to ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ and mail to ‘PO Box 42193. London SW8 3XY’.
