The MAC are an independent advisory group focused on looking at the issue of migration, which includes problems affecting the Chinese community. The initial task for the Migration Advisory Committee is to produce shortage occupation lists for the United Kingdom, and Scotland, by June 2008 for use alongside the launch of Tier 2 of the new points-based system for migration. These lists will comprise skilled occupations where, in the committee's view, there are shortages that can sensibly be filled by enabling employers to recruit migrants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The committee has published an interim report outlining its intended approach to determining which occupations should be on the list. At the same time the committee has issued, through the report, a call for evidence in order to seek views on the proposed methodology and to invite evidence to be submitted on occupations that stakeholders believe should be included on the list. We would very much encourage you to respond, if you feel able to do so, as this would significantly inform their report to Government on the implementation of the new "points based" migration system for economic migrants, including from China. If you haven't already completed the form, please make sure that you do so as soon as possible as the deadline (Friday 25th April) is fast approaching. We have attached the form and the report.
