Wong Kei restaurant, at the heart of London’s Chinatown, has recently come under attack from Evening Standard who ran a two page article following the placement of an undercover journalist working to uncover the practise of employers hiring illegal workers.
Following the report, the Environmental Health and the Immigration Service visited Wong Kei and members of the Chinatown community became angered by the false allegations, which caused lost of trade to Wong Kei and other local businesses. The article itself contained falsified information and basic untruths that clearly indicated that Mr Lee had never worked there. Ian Lee claimed he was "taken to my workstation below street level, in a cramped humid basement kitchen, with no windows, no fresh air, and no natural light." Wong Kei's kitchen is on the third floor, however and there is no cooking area in the basement. Following discussions with legal representatives and leaders of the community, Dimsum is happy to report that Evening Standard’s solicitor called Wong Kei and admitted Evening Standard made a mistake in printing the article by Ian Lee. Evening Standard will now be publishing an apology and pay for Wong Kei's legal costs. |
