Culture

September 28 - November 4

Cheung's work explores notions of locality and our perception of the spaces that surround us. She draws the viewer into created spaces, encouraging engagement and interaction. Not easily categorised, her practise encompasses participatory events, communal processes of making and revolves around interactions between individuals and the worlds they inhabit. Her seductive, hybrid light sculptures juxtapose elements of traditional craft technique and Chinese culture with an experimentation of form and materials. Cheung draws on her personal heritage and Chinese culture as an infinite source of stimulation. In this fluid exchange of ideas, form, and materials, the inherent associations of objects and events are displaced and altered, allowing new ideas to surface.

Lisa Cheung, currently based in London, was born in Hong Kong and has studied in Canada and London. Recent projects have included a residency and exhibition Grazing, 2000 with Emil Goh at the Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, Double Happiness (with Emil Goh) at the Hayward Gallery as part of Cities on the Move, 2000, and How the West was Lost and Won, Czech Centre London. Lisa has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in London, Toronto, Hong Kong, and Germany.
