Now updated for 2008: See http://www.dimsum.co.uk/food/top-london-dim-sum-restaurants-2008.html for the latest listings!

Dim sumGiven our enticing name, many visitors come to this website looking for recommendations on restaurants to go to for dim sum. Although they find much more here, they leave not fully satisfied because their initial goal was unfulfilled. So we have decided to help those lost souls with something that Dimsum.co.uk has never done before – a list of ten restaurants in London for dim sum!

The listings below were decided by our committee of foodies after much discussion. We wanted to make sure we chose restaurants that were authentic and good quality. In the end, the dim sum restaurants we chose for the top ten fell into two types: the traditional dim sum restaurants with typical Chinese restaurant décor and indifferent service but solid, well-priced dim sum and the ‘modern’ ones with award-winning décor, Western service, and Western prices but equally high quality dim sum.

Modern Dim Sum

Until a few years ago, there was no such thing as modern dim sum restaurants in London. Most dim sum places were in Chinatown with the exception of the excellent Royal China chain, which tended to sit in wealthy areas around London.

However, with the arrival of Hakkasan, this all changed. Hakkasan completely revamped the image of dim sum and Chinese restaurants by turning the cuisine on its head. British-born Alan Yau has crafted a masterpiece of a dim sum destination with a restaurant that won a Best Restaurant Design award, earned a Michelin, and packed the hard-to-find basement restaurant with celebs. However, Hakkasan made sure that the real star of the restaurant shined – the food.

Following in Hakkassan’s footsteps came several excellent copy-cats: Shanghai Blues, Ping Pong, Royal China Club, and Yauatcha (sister restaurant to Hakkasan).

Hakkasan
8 Hanway Place, London, W1T 1HF
Tel: 020 7927 7000

With a design award, a Michelin star, and destination site for celebs, this pioneer is still the place to be seen and to eat exquisite dim sum. It’s in the basement of a dodgy alley off of Tottenham Court, but that only adds to its dark, sultry allure.

Yauatcha
15 Broadwick Street, London, W1F 0DL
Tel: 0870 780 8265

With the success of Hakkasan, especially for the lunchtime dim sum offerings, the owner decided to open a second restaurant to focus on dim sum all day, not just for lunch. It opened to instant success with difficult to secure reservations where diners are given 90 minutes to order, eat, and vacate their seats.

Royal China Club
40-42 Baker Street, London W1U 7AJ
Tel: 020 7486 3898

The Royal China chain is every Chinese person’s favourite dim sum restaurant. Their dim sum is the best you can find in London at such reasonable prices. Recently, they have opened the Royal China Club to copy the success of Hakkasan. The décor is tasteful unlike the gaudy Royal China chain. The food is of equal quality but with more innovative flair and expensive ingredients (e.g. lobster, abalone, sharks fin).

Shanghai Blues
193-197 High Holborn, WC1V 7BD
Tel: 020 7404 1668

Shanghai Blues was the first restaurant to copy Hakkassan and we have to agree that the décor and the food is on the same level. However, their Holborn location and lack of celebrity status has limited their success. Regardless, if you want Hakkassan quality dim sum and décor without the pretentious clientele and hard to secure table, this is the place.

Ping Pong
45 Great Marlborough Street, W1F 7JL
(also Westbourne Grove, Marylebone Village, Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Goodge Street - see website for details)
Tel: 020 7851 6969

Ping Pong has generated a lot of buzz for nice modern décor and good quality dim sum at reasonable prices. It is the only restaurant in this category that have similar prices to the ‘traditional dim sum restaurants’.

Traditional Dim Sum

When it comes to traditional dim sum, it is all about value. The key criteria being great tasting food at a low price and if they have great service and nice décor those are an added bonus. In terms of value, we’re looking at dishes around £2-3, so a fulfilling meal can be had for around £10 including tea.

Blindly entering Chinatown looking for good dim sum can be a daunting task, with a fair number of restaurants with similar names and similar looking restaurant fronts, the odds are not in your favour. And if you haven’t learned already, in London, you can’t expect a place is good just because there is a crowd or queue. So save yourself the trouble, start with our list and hopefully you’ll find a favourite for a regular weekend dim sum get together with friends.

Royal China
13 Queensway, Bayswater, W2 4QJ. Tel: 020 7221 2535
24-26 Baker Street, W1U 3BZ. Tel: 020 7487 4688
30 Westferry Circus, Riverside, E14 8RR. Tel: 020 7719 0888
68 Queens Grove, St. Johns Wood, NW8 6ER. Tel: 020 7586 4280

With four locations within London, there is no doubt Royal China is popular, and for good reason. Each location maintains the Royal China standard and offers great traditional dim sum, with many swearing it is the best in London. Be prepared to take a ticket and queue if you come on the weekends.

New World
1 Gerrard Place, W1D 5PA
Tel: 020 7734 0396

New World is one of the only restaurants in London where you can have the traditional dim sum experience.  In the centre of Chinatown, waitresses come to your table with trolleys of dim sum dishes - simply choose what you fancy.  Good for dim sum beginners as there is no need to know the names of each of the dishes.  However, it is best to come on a weekend lunchtime when it is most busy and the dishes the most fresh.

Imperial China
25a Lisle Street, WC2H 7BA
Tel: 020 7734 3388

This restaurant is a dim sum gem tucked in Chinatown. You would be mistaken to think this was just any other restaurant; you enter over a little wooden bridge spanning a small pond to arrive at the main seating area. It’s very nicely decorated and you almost expect it to be more expensive than it is. The service here is excellent and the food is equally good.

Lido
41 Gerrard Street, W1D 5QF
Tel: 020 7437 4431

Also in Chinatown, Lido is excellent choice for freshly made to order dim sum.  Particularly good are the cheung fung (rice noodle rolls).  Lido offers the best value of the restaurants here, with good quality dim sum in a comfortable environment at surprisingly cheap prices.

Golden Dragon
28-29 Gerrard Street, W1D 6JW
Tel: 020 7734 2763

Golden Dragon is a popular place for dim sum and is often very busy on the weekends - reservations are helpful.  Food is generally to a high standard although the service can sometimes be a bit sultry, and the decor is beginning to look a little dated.  Nevertheless, it's a safe bet for an afternoon snack or weekend brunch of dim sum right in the centre of Chinatown.

Of course, food is very much a subjective and contentious issue.  Is there anywhere we have missed?  Don't rate some of our choices?  Know some great dim sum places outside of London?  Let us know below.

The dimsum in London HongKong is worth mentioning too. Fresh, well-made dimsum. Attentive staff, spacious dinning area.I just went last weekend and would definitely like to go back.
BABS - DIM SUM in the City Posted 18:14 on 27 March 2007
Can anyone recommend a restaurant serving Dim Sum during the week based around London City (EC3)
Z210 - Trolley Service Yum Cha Posted 23:04 on 22 June 2007
Is there anywhere in London that serves Yum Cha by trolley service in London? Same as they do in Hong Kong and even Sydney.

This is my favourite way to eat Dim Sum
Anonymous - Trolleys Posted 12:53 on 1 November 2007
New World above has trolleys
Yan - Trolley service Posted 13:37 on 23 December 2007
Yes, CCK, Chen Cheng Ku, 17 Wardour St w1. At the bottom end near leicester sq. Good Dim sum with efficient trolley service.
victor - yum cha Posted 9:53 on 5 October 2008
we were in sydney and had yum cha at a restarent over the top of paddys market the best fun ever, all your food from a trolley ,some one in london must start a new trend.
Luke - Trolley Service Posted 23:29 on 23 June 2007
New World in Chinatown (listed above) has a trolley service for their Dimsum. I have heard of others in London that do the same, but don't remember the names off-hand.
Jo - Nr Heathrow Posted 3:02 on 1 July 2007
London HongKong on Bath Road/Harmondsworth Rd opposite Heathrow - extremely good, fresh, fried and also good, fresh, steamed dim sum - compares well to Good Luck on Nathan Rd (HK). Background music can sometimes be a bit cheesy. Free parking...!
Adrian Ho - Alisan - wembley Posted 13:44 on 6 July 2007
Located next to Wembley Arena and opposite the main entrance of Wembly Stadium.

Very plush

Great lunchtime dim sum and extensive evening menu which included cantonese classics and modern dishes including venison and ostrich.

Seth Phipps - Laureate, 64 Shaftesbury Avenu Posted 14:49 on 7 July 2007
Superb value, dim sum is very fresh, service is friendly and quick. The decor is bright and (most importantly!) clean, which is not always the case. Expect to pay about £20 for two.

Once you've been, you'll want to keep going back, again and again...!
PJ - Experience 1 18 Shaftesbury Av Posted 13:24 on 2 August 2007

you can't beat Experience for price before 4pm. Expect to wait though, it gets absolutely packed!
Oiwah - Shanghai Posted 16:03 on 8 August 2007
The Shanghai restuarant on Kingsland Road in Hackney, Dalston is amazing! Best Dim Sum I've had in London. They also have happy hour where everything is discounted after 3pm - bargain!
steve - shanghai Posted 9:22 on 28 October 2007
The shanghai restaurant is one of the worst anywhere. It is an overpriced rip off with kitchen and front of house staff that seem to have trained at Macdonalds. I have been 3 times, in the hope that it had improved as I live nearby. It actually got worse each time. Their dim sum is, literally, inedible. Have you not noticed that the only people who eat there are drunks and people who obviously have no idea?
inglewood - New World Posted 22:31 on 11 August 2007
There is no way New World is one of the top ten! we cant believe it! We just went there 3 weeks ago to try their dimsum. The dimsum are far below standard. After ordering 3 dimsum, we just left because we were so disappointed. The cheung fan's dough wasnt cooked properly, Taro Prawn Cake had a foul and sour taste and their prawn dumpling wasnt that good either. Waste of time and money!
JW - Princess Garden Posted 16:40 on 21 August 2007
Already left my comments on Princess Garden which is (sort of) opposite Selfridges on the other topic so won't make much comments here.

Laureate is good.

Jade garden is ok.

But do not recommend New World at all.
JW - forgot to add ... Posted 16:42 on 21 August 2007
Do not recommend Ping Pong and Chinese Experience as well. Stated my reasons already.
Jennifer - Dim T - London Bridge Posted 12:17 on 29 August 2007
The quality at Dim T is not amazing but... the location looking out over London Bridge, at really reasonable prices, makes it one of my favourite Dim Sum restaurants. It's lovely.
Anonymous - dim sum in surrey Posted 9:37 on 4 September 2007
anyone know dim sum restaurant in surrey near epsom, sutton or bansted? croydon wing yip is too far...
Megan - Joy King Lau Posted 10:11 on 6 October 2007
I definitely recommend the above - the quality and price is really good. Although I have noticed the portions seem to be getting smaller.

Dim sum at New World isn't that great and the price is tooe expensive.

Dylan Lowe - Wanted: Moon cake Posted 17:52 on 22 October 2007
I've been travelling around W. Yorkshire in the last couple of weeks I didn't have much time to think about the Mid-Autumn Festival. I'm currently residing in Leeds and I have tried to obtain a few boxes of Moon cake; but, as far as I'm aware they're all sold out because there are no supermarkets in Chinatown which seem to stock them this time of year. I would be most grateful if someone could give me a few suggestions as to how I might obtain this Chinese delicacy at this time when the Mid-Autumn Festival is long-since passed. Does anybody know of any UK supplier who might have a stockpile of Moon cakes? Otherwise, could someone suggest an overseas supplier who might be willing to conduct business with me at this time of year?
Sue - Moon Cake Posted 11:25 on 27 November 2007
Hello - Dylan Lowe,

I live in Bangkok, I'm Thai/Chinese. My family is a big supplier of Dim Sum frozen foods and processed food, we can also supply Moon Cake.

For further information, please contact me at lobster.inc@hotmail.com.

Chris - What about Harbour City? Posted 14:40 on 3 November 2007
Of the traditional Dim Sum places our long time reliable favourite is Harbour City. Although the quality varies during the week, at weekends with their best chefs HC produces dim sum that is for Western tastes far above New World or the others in the area. Give it a go, theres usually only 5-10 mins wait.
sum - royal china Posted 17:58 on 20 November 2007
can someone tell me which Royal China branch is better? Queensway or Baker st? I've never been to aany of them.
Stephen - Royal China Posted 13:50 on 21 November 2007
The Royal China in Queensway is fabulous, been several times and each time great food and service. I'm sure Baker St would be excellent also
SlowRunner - All day dim sum Posted 16:03 on 9 December 2007
Can anyone recommend a restaurant in C. London that offers all day dim sum in Central London? I've eaten at Ping Pong and found the menu limited; Dim T is the other choice of my gwei lo friends but I would prefer to go elsewhere.

I agree with you that Dim T is not the best choice. Yauatcha serves dim sum all day and is excellent in my opinion.
Andrew - Golden Place - harrow Posted 17:01 on 17 December 2007
I have always prefered this North London venue to the ones in China town. the yam cakes, turnip cakes and prawn cheung fun are the best I have eaten, and essential orders :)
tammy - 24 hours dimsum Posted 17:22 on 17 December 2007
Any idea where I can find a restaurant that would serve dim sum at 7pm in the west end area?
greg - Ping Pong Posted 11:43 on 10 January 2008
Very surprised that Ping Pong has managed to be included in list of the Top 10 Dim Sum London Resturants. On the same page as Yauatcha and its world class sister Hakkasan you have a chain restaurant that serves dim sum that they pull out of the freezer that are not fresh and of poor quality. You get a very limited menu, at almost double China Town prices, (Hakkasan is very expensive but also very good.) Have you noticed the lack of Chinese customers or staff when walking by Ping Pong? I can think of three Ping Pong's within a five minute walk of China Town and would suggest that you make that short walk into Gerrard Street where Ping Pong would never work!

Great Value and quality would be Joy King Lau off Lisle Street. £15/head loads of choice!
zheng - dim sum in reading Posted 11:31 on 12 January 2008
anyone knows of any good dim sum in Reading area, we use china palace, the service is good normally but not so good on sunday...too crowded.
Dimsumfan - Harbour city Posted 20:07 on 17 January 2008
Harbour city in China town is very good, reasonably priced and high quality dim sum.

Julie - Dim Sum on Chinese New Year - Posted 14:31 on 22 January 2008
Hi,

I'm trying to book a table for 12 people for Dim Sum on Sun 10th Feb, which is when the Chinese New Year parade is on in China Town. BUT, none of the restaurants listed here take bookings on Sundays!!! Anyone suggest one that I could try? I want to book ASAP.

Thanks,

Julie
sim dum Posted 15:09 on 4 February 2008
hi julie,

it's not common for chinese restaurants to take bookings for dimsum in this country, not even on CNY. they do not want to hold up the crowd/queue outside so they run on a 1st come, 1st serve basis... then kick you out & get the next load of hungry customers in :)
Anonymous Posted 14:42 on 25 January 2008
I highly recommend Super Star Chinese Restuarent at London Excel Docklands.
They offer 30% off Dim Sum. I think they take bookings.
Anonymous Posted 18:47 on 3 April 2008
Are you sure it's still called Super Star? Last I heard it'd changed hands and is now under the name of China Palace...
Rich Y - Phoenix Palace Posted 18:28 on 28 January 2008
3-5 Glentworth Street, London, NW15PG. Nearest tube Baker Street

Mad about Dim Sum and have to say Phoneix Palace is up there with the best. Excellent service, great decor and consistently good food. Highly recommended!!
Krystal - shoreditch Posted 15:08 on 3 February 2008
hey does anyone know if the Drunken Monkey on shoreditch highstreet is any good???
Luke - Drunken Monkey Posted 15:25 on 3 February 2008
Hi Krystal

I've been to the Drunken Monkey and was quite disappointed. The selection is very limited and not really authentic. Plus some people on my table had to wait over 90 minutes for a stir-fried noodle dish!
lucy - pearl liang, princess garden l Posted 18:16 on 4 February 2008
the dim sum at pearl liang in paddington is pretty good.. i havent been for a couple of months but their siao long bad was the best ive had in london. . very big and full of juice. For sundays in general princess garden is very nice. For the most authentic north eastern food in london (i am from north east china) you have to try lao di fang (gourmet san) on bethnal green road. . but it's so popular expect to wait up to an hour and beyond. . happy eating!
trickmouse - I love Ping Pong Posted 16:42 on 7 February 2008
I love Ping Pong in Soho. I've met loads of famous people there like Clive Anderson and Bill Bailey! Plus the dim sum is good. They missed the website at the top so it's http://www.pingpongdimsum.com
Mark - Shanghai, Kingsland Road, Hack Posted 17:05 on 8 February 2008
Hang on a minute! I see Steve has knocked my favourite dim-sum restaurant. All I can say is I have been going there for over 4 years and am never dissapointed. It is really very good and most of my chinese friends agree that the standard is excellent. Ok, service can be slow but once you taste the food all is forgiven. To boot, it used to be an old eel pie and mash shop and is a Listed building with all the old shop interior preserved-very cool.
Kammo - shanghai, kingsland road, hack Posted 11:16 on 5 May 2008
Hang on a minute Mark. You cant be serious about this worst chinese restaurant in london. You always know the food is going to be rubbish when the menu describes each dish in pointless detail and glowing terms. I have eaten here 3 times over 3 years. Each time the food was disgusting, not just poor. Each time it was empty or virtually empty. Here is an example of its food. Belly pork with water chestnut (I know, I know, what a stupid, non chinese dish to choose). It came in a gloopy dark brown sauce which tasted like stock cube and water. It had half a tin of water chestnut and 4 tiny pices of revolting tasteless pork. When I complained about the lack of meat the manager said that that was normal. The cost of this great dish? I think it was £12 (if it was less I apologise but it was certainly not less than £10). Mark, you need to get out more. Go to Royal China Baker St for dim sum one day. On sundays the queues go out into the street so get there early or late.
Kammo - Chinese in Hackney Posted 11:30 on 5 May 2008
I forgot to say, Mark, if you dont want to leave your manor then the Vietnamese Canteen on Englefield road N1 is not at all bad and by far the most popular chinese/vietnamese restaurant in the area. Much cooler than the depressing Shanghai, with a much more impressive political history.
Russell - Dim Sum in Birmingham Posted 14:10 on 10 February 2008
anybody recommend a good dim sum restaurant in birmingham?
rory staunton - hello Posted 10:56 on 24 February 2008

Gio - Peninsula Chinese Restaurant, Posted 17:36 on 25 February 2008
This restaurant was mentioned to me and took my family there to give it a go. We now go there 3x a month. Best Dimsum and are served before 5 pm. Go early on sundays due to the long queue. See you there
Gio - Peninsula Chinese Restaurant Posted 17:37 on 25 February 2008
It is located at the ground floor of the Holiday Inn Hotel in Greenwich. Closest station is North Greenwich on the Jubille Line.

Mark - DIM SUM Restayrant for 30 peop Posted 17:50 on 26 March 2008
Hey there,

Our company looking for a DIM SUM restaurant for staff night, about 30 people for friday evening.
We want table for 30 people at once, I mean one table together.

Please, what do you suggest, thank you!
tim - re: Mark Posted 0:15 on 24 April 2008
30 people in one table is going to be hard to find. However, 30 people split in 3 tables in a sectioned off area is very possible. Pearl Liang, Royal China, and Imperial China can do it.
SC - Ping Pong Posted 18:01 on 7 May 2008
To be honest, having eaten the stuff for the past 30 years dim sum at Ping Pong is very average if not outright poor; though it partly makes up for it with the cocktails and the ambience.

Or is it just Yauatcha / Hakkasan on a budget and for the masses?

Abigail - Dim Sum for dinner Posted 0:03 on 3 June 2008
Of all these restaurants mentioned does anyone know if they, excluding Ping Pong, Yataucha, Hakkasan and Dim T, serve Dim Sum for dinner, as opposed to lunchtime, as I went to Royal China one sunday evening and they said they only did Dim Sum for lunch
Todd - Re: Dimsum for dinner Posted 23:03 on 3 June 2008
Abigail, the ones you mentioned are the only ones that I am aware of that serve dim sum for dinner. Dim sum is not traditionally served for dinner. It is a brunch/lunch affair. You will not find dim sum restaurants in Asia serving dim sum after lunch. However, some of the more modern restaurants in the UK do serve it for dinner. I must admit I find it kinda weird to eat dim sum in the evening but that's because I grew up always only eating it for lunch.
Anonymous Posted 18:50 on 8 June 2008
London hongkonk is very good
Ale - Peninsula Posted 11:43 on 18 June 2008
I am surprised that Peninsula got mentioned so late in the discussion. You do not get trolley service but its dim-sum is far better than anything you will find at New World, Ping Pong or even, dare I say, Royal China. Staff are a little rude because they are constantly busy and the room is large but to be honest I can pardon them that. The trip to Greenwich requires commitment if you live in the centre but the quality is consistently good, and prices very decent.
renton - oriental city colindale Posted 15:37 on 18 June 2008
any ideas where to go now that the bastards at brent council have closed down oriental city and the great china city restaurant that was there??
Mungbean - top dim sum places Posted 13:20 on 24 June 2008
I am surprised that i agree with most of your entries in your top 10 list! I recently ate dinner at Hakkasan and Shanghai Blue - I totally agree with your comments! We spent about GBP60 each to dine at each restaurants for a dinner, both absolute delicious! Royal China always rank in my top position for traditional yum char places. Princess Garden is under rated - swanky, very good service, excellent food but very cheap prices. Peninsula in Greenwich is hit and miss. Alisan - went there once, was ok - very quiet so perhaps not very popular. Pheonix Palace is also under rated - very traditional, very good service, very good food and excellent food.
going to ping pong in tower hill tomorrow for lunch so will revert on that tomorrow!
Peter - Dim Sum in Hertfordshire Posted 5:18 on 2 July 2008
Anyone recommend a dim sum restaurant in Hertfordshire? Am missing my weekly dim sum having moved from Bristol where Dynasty do it so well - particularly now they're open for dim sum til 5.00pm. Central London is too far to go and even Harrow (Golden Palace) is a long way.
helena Posted 18:07 on 13 July 2008
i would highly recommend alisan.. the dim sum is reasonable and the dim sum are so unique, you won't see much in other restaurant, service is excellent and food was serve quickly.
its just opposite wembley stadium, very easy to find.
Lucy - Top DIM SUM places Posted 16:42 on 14 July 2008
i love Dim Sum and been to many place... here are my top 5...as you can see i'm not keen on ChinaTown - Imperial China is okay but noodle dishes are sub-standard. Don't care much for Ping Pong or Dim T - all very gimmicky.

1. Royal China Putney (de-merged from Royal China Group but the best in my opinion, quality is exceptional. Also convenient for South London dwellers

2. Royal China Queensway - comes a very close 2nd- amazing choice

3. Yauatcha - all-day dim sum - downstairs is perfect for romantic date, quality & presentation exceptional - price is steep

4. Phoneix Palace - Baker Street - great authentic atmosphere - full of Chinese and fantastic quality

5.China Boulevard - near Wandsworth Bridge - free parking. Better than average China-town grub. Lovely views of river Thames.

Best dim sum ever. Never had a bad experience there. Food always fresh, delicious and won't cost you an arm & leg. Nice, relaxing location too.

I went to Shanghai on Kingsland Road once for convenience and I can gladly say I'll never go there again - everything about it was awful.
