vegdimsumAs a follow up to our ever popular top top 10 dimsum restaurants in London, we'd like to share with you our favourites around the UK.

Yang Sing (Manchester)

Set over many floors, with private dining facilities available for 30-220 people. Its unique charm and unequalled dedication to the palate of the connoisseur, have earned the Yang Sing a reputation as being amongst the very best Cantonese restaurants in Europe but it's still an expensive place to eat.

34 Princess St Manchester, M1 4JY 0161 236 2200

Must (Birmingham)

Described unimaginatively as a ‘must' by the Birmingham Post this relatively new chain restaurant has proved popular in the area. The atmosphere has been described as light and the menu extensive without being over the top. The food is of respectable value and as a new restaurant will need to keep it that way if it wants to establish itself in the area.

Must Dim Sum Bar & Restaurant, 11-13 Newhall Street, Birmingham. 0121 212 2266

Maxi's (Leeds)

The flagship restaurant of this chain was established in 1989 and specialises in authentic Chinese food. As a result their dim sum are said to be just that, authentic. With good service and decent value it would seem that Maxi's is worth it's reputation for reliable Chinese food. The success of this first restaurant has meant that Maxi's were able to open more restaurants including Maxi's express in Leeds that has a dim sum buffet.

6 Bingley Street - Leeds City Centre - LS3 1LX - 0113 244 0552

Dim Sum (Sheffield)

A popular choice in the local area, it is recommended that you book for this restaurant. The menu is extensive although a little bare for vegetarians, but customers often leave enthusing about how cheap the meal was for the quality of the food. On a Sunday there have been queues out the door on occasion so believe the hype on this one.

201 London Road, Sheffield. Tel: 0114 255 0467.

Far East (Liverpool)

This restaurant has been around since the mid 1980s and the outside appearance isn't spectacular, with a car park on its roof there certainly isn't a lack of parking. So the food must be good if it prospered in these circumstances. Open 7 days a week the restaurant has a special service on Sunday where all manner of dim sum are wheeled out on a trolley for you to choose from.

Far East, 27-35 Berry St, Liverpool, L1 9DF 0151 709 3141

Dynasty (Bristol)

Dynasty has traditional dim sum dishes available at lunch time only. However in was voted one of the top 5 best by Alan Yau of Hakkasan. The dim sum at dinnertime is meant to be the best in Bristol and the staff are known for being friendly and helpful.

14a St Thomas St Bristol BS1 6JJ

Hong Kong International (Edinburgh)

This seemingly modest appearing restaurant attracts many Asian customers which is perhaps testimony to its ability to cook authentic dim sum. The average price of around £3 for a dish is par for the course and the staff are said to be friendly and helpful. Unfortunately for vegetarians the choice is limited as most dishes contain meat or fish.

104 Hanover St , Edinburgh , EH2 1DR - 0131 226 6864

Saigon Dim Sum (Edinburgh)

Featured in the ‘Eating & Drinking guide 2008' Saigon recently changed the upstairs of their restaurant from a buffet to a traditional Chinese restaurant. The quality of the dim sum in the downstairs part of the restaurant surprises many. The service is questionable but is beaten by the fantastic quality of dim sum and its relatively good value.

14 South St Andrew Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2AZ - 0131 557 3737

Ba Oriental (Cardiff)

Sat right next to the marina in Cardiff bay this restaurant in a stylish place for young professionals. With a dim sum bar and a good vegetarian selection it is popular with the local workforce who want a treat for their lunch. They have an extensive wine list too but expect to pay a bit more for your luxurious surroundings.

Unit 27 Mermaid Quay, Cardiff CF10 5BZ

Must (Birmingham) tried with my family, must be avoided in future.

At your next round of recommendations, please include only purveyors of honest tasty Chinese food; gourmet of Dim Sum aren't really taken in by glitzy surroundings.

Wing wah in birmingham is much much better. Why, because all the chinese community go there and it's next to wing yip.

Or go into china town itself. 2 main chinese restaurants there do good dim sum and is also where the chinese community go.

I should know as i'm one of them!

Must and all these new ones like Ba are all westernised and you dont get the good dim sum chefs in them!

Kenny Liew - tai wu - manchester Posted 12:04 on 26 September 2009
I would highly recommend tai wu in manchester. The food's great, and the price is 50% off before 3pm (if I remember correctly).
Wing wah in birmingham is just so-so. Been there several times already - cannot compare with HongKong (bath road, london)
ceri - kwok man (manchester) Posted 20:51 on 14 October 2009
i have to say, compared to all the dim sum restaurants ive been to, kwok man is one of the best.

It's cheap, cheerful, friendly and it's open til 3/4am most nights.

When ur a poor student and need good food, this is the place to go.
wence - dimsum in southampton? Posted 22:55 on 15 October 2009
hi, are there any good dimsum restos in southampton?
Poy-Yun - Dim Sum Southampton Posted 13:47 on 9 February 2010
We used to eat dim sum in Pearl Harbour, from the age of about 3 until about 5 years ago when I moved away from Southampton (I'm now almost 30). The dim sum was always very nice, especially the more authentic HK style dishes. My family is Chinese and we'd always go there, as do a lot of the local Chinese community.
Gok-Sum Posted 13:24 on 12 April 2010
Pearl Harbour isn't what it was. It's still popular with chinese students studying in Southampton but my mum and dad won't really go there anymore. I went with friends a few weeks ago and the quality was variable, although nothing terrible! Don't know of any other Dim Sum restaurant still going in the middle of Southampton though.
Peter Bond - Dynasty, Bristol Posted 13:53 on 18 November 2009
I've been dim summing at Dynasty for some years. They are open from noon to 5pm daily for dim sum and the reason I have been back many times is the good range of dim sum superbly cooked. Their dim sum is fresh, light & delicious. Having just got back from a trip to Hong Kong, Dynasty is a reminder of the best dim sum Hong Kong has to offer. As is often the case, Dynasty (which is above a Chinese supermarket) has many Chinese patrons. Highly recommended.

Been to Wing Wah in Birmingham, they do proper dim sum and well presented. Guys you must try it, they have new chefs from Hong Kong. The other Chinese restaurant in China Town is too old fashion, menu is always the same. Wing Wah has new selection every month.
