The reasons why there are no Chinese characters in UK programmes is the programmes makers do not know how to write a good storylines without the typical
1) me just come from the main land and speak bad English
2) that every Chinese person work in takeaways/restaurants
3) Chinese population is so small in comparision to other ethnic minorities that TV stations can't be bothered to do the research.
4) there aren't enough actors who iare willing to stick it out and make it in this country due to lack of roles.

Hence we have the situation where someone like Maggie Cheung who grew up in UK have to go back to Hong Kong in order to be famous and pursue her chosen career.

Enough said.

Depends what the role is of course.

But preferably I'd like to see chinese characters on TV acting out normal roles with no reference to their culture, accent or colour. I mean, most of the characters on TV are one-dimensional characters anyway right? You don't see a black actor whos character moans about his great grandfathers enslavement by the spanish right? Its not necessary. I'm not saying that the chinese should forget their culture, what I'm saying is that chinese are ordinary people who do ordinary things. There shouldn't need to be some special script written to take into account the fact the actors chinese. For crying out loud I had spaghetti bolognese for dinner last night, played footy with the lads on sunday, and am working in a predominantly white office today in the south east of england. If I wasn't posting on a BBC forum you wouldn't have blinked twice!
