I've been noticing a lot more Chinese actors being given screen time on TV recently, which I think is brilliant. And their not playing the usual roles of Zen masters or evil triads either, but normal everyday people - just like us! So I'm going to start a list and hopefully people will add to it. Here's mine that I can recall:
The CTU agent in '24' (recurring role)
The police contact in 'Dark angel' (recurring role)
The honourable bugging specialist in yesterdays 'Smallville' (guest spot, and coincidentally same actor as in Dark angel)
The principal and his son in 'Smallville' (recurring season 1)
Also:
One of the cadets in 'Space, above and beyond' (lead role!) |

| Last time I saw any Chinese on UK TV was in The Bill and it was about triad gangs or something... also there's that friend of the girl Julia Swahilia(sp?) in Absolutely Fabulous? I think you'll find that there aren't that many Chinese actors in the UK... |

| I don't know any Chinese popstars and don't even listen to any Chinese music. I guess not speaking Cantonese might be part of that reason! |

In starting this thread I hoped to highlight the positive aspects of Asians in TV who weren't playing stereotypical roles. I think your post though does highlight how behind British TV is in showing Asians as part of British society. As for musicians, I think there is one A-list band with a chinese bassist, Foo fighters I think :) |

I've just finished watching 2nd Generation that was on Channel four a weeks back. I taped it and I've been busy you see. Anyway I thought that it was pretty good. Don't know how 'authentic' it is but I enjoyed it.
Now all they have to do is make a Chinese version!

|

on the Learning Zone programme 'Macbeth Shorts' there was a Chinese actress (shock, horror!). It was a programme about the play and had actors play key scenes in it.
The actress (I don't know her name) played the nurse in the scene where Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and goes on about washing her bloodied hands - "Who knew the old man had so much blood in him?"
As it was part of Learning Zone it was on early in the morning so you'd have to have been a night owl or insomniac to see it, and also an English student.
I've seen her before though, she's Scottish and appeared in Taggart (I think). Bit of a surprise though, chinese actor doing Shakespeare. I didn't think the BBC would do that. And you don't normally see chinese actors playing Shakespeare. |

Another one:
Buffy the vampire slayer final series, one of the chosen slayers (I watch it on BBC so I'm a little behind) is supposedly from China.
Unfortunately she seems to be a terrible actress with a penchant for overacting. And the words coming out of her mouth sound like a strangled duck speaking cantonese underwater. Maybe its actually Madarin or a different dialect of cantonese to what I'm used to and shes speaking perfectly and its my own ignorance thats gonna make me look stupid. Hmmm |

Keep forgetting to add this one:
Some chinese girl (20-30?) co-presenting an early morning childrens tv programme, target audience is probably kindergarten. I've only caught it twice and didn't actually watch it (for obvious reasons), but I think it might be british made, and her command of english is good so shes probably a BBC. |
