Personally speaking, I don't mind at all. I think it's brilliant that people would love to try new experiences by studying in a new country, and all the more respect for studying in a second language. The only complaint I have is foreign students being clique. I understand that being in a new place one tends to find others similar, but that takes away most of the experience in joining in a new culture! Oh, and just in case I didn't make it clear (I tend to gibber on to avoid doing actual work), welcome :)

Haha, maybe because we're no good at speaking chinese! That probably makes it a confidence thing. I'm not 100% sure of my Cantonese and its disconcerting to speak it to someone who is.

As for those that you feel blank you, well there are prats everywhere. For each one that ignores you there'll be another willing to say hello and get to know before ignoring you (only kidding!).

I can't say I've liked all the BBC I've met either, but that goes par for the course with anyone you meet :)

Um, I'm guessing bad luck on losing your job. To be honest though, I could barely understand what you were writing!

Soon, like u I came here to study from M'sia. but that's a good 8 yrs ago. i can understand the difficulty of joining in a "foreign" group and hence tend to stick with our own. I think this is mainly due to communication and culture. my spoken english was crap when i first got here, all the "one's" and "lahs" just confuses the locals. i was quite lucky as i get to work in a local takaway part timing at weekends and that's helped overcome my language problem alot. once both parties understand each other, believe me u'll start enjoying socialising more. going to the pub to have a pint and chat is part of the culture here. you cannot just say they're talking rubbish, i believe u like most m'sians enjoy the weekly night out at the mamak's for some food and talking rubbish as well.
My point is, you're here to study and learn the local culture as well. What's the point of doing a degree overseas if you end up with a certificate at the end but haven't got a clue about the politics, art and culture of the country? Might as well do the degree in a local uni. The media here for example is an enlightening experience for me. Having been brainwashed by the M'sian govt for years with all the propaganda crap eg supposed racial unity + equality, it made me realise how important freedom of speech is. After being here for so many years, it dawned upon me that the m'sian govt is intitutional racism at a national level. You will never be able to mention any so called "sensitive issues" without being locked up by the ISA at home. Like the subject heading, i suggest u do what the romans do in rome ie if you insist on spending ur time surfing about news back home instead of trying to understand a foreign culture, then uv wasted a lot of money coming here to study in the first place.

@Soon re: SORRY ,,, COS I AM STILL LEARNING,,, ENGLISH,,,,,

Don't wory about it, I just couldn't make out what you were trying to say is all :)

slcheang is pretty much spot on. The whole idea of being in a different country is to soak in the culture, even if you don't mean to take any of it back with you. Go out there and talk absolute rubbish, I'm sure you'll enjoy it after a while. I do it all the time and can give you pointers if you like, hahaha!

Oh, and as for breaking into those big clique groups, the easiest way is to just get to know one or two people. Its a domino effect where they'll introduce you to a few more, and so on. Thats advice from my own uni days that I don't think goes out of date. Sure, there may be people you don't want to know, but it never hurts to be polite! Right, really must do some work...

I'm sure you'll be alright, life has a tendency to work itself out if you make an effort. And in any case, there always is someone worse than you.

I'm most likely going to have the opposite 'problem' soon..... me and my (Chinese) partner are going to move to China as soon as I can find work over there, and I'm quite nervous about being conspicuous as the token white guy around the workplace etc. Though having said that I don't think I would have any issues about trying to just hang around with other foreigners...... now all I need to do is improve my Mandarin! :)
