I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but my wife (Chinese) and I (English) where wondering if there were any baby names that could be used in both Chinese and English?

(we are thinking ahead!)

The only ones we could come up with were:

Lee = Li
May = Mei

...which to be honest neither of us like (big apology to anyone called these names!). I mean essentially we just need a name which has the consonant and vowel sounds which exist in both languages e.g. NOT 'th' etc etc

...any ideas?

Why not find a name with a legion or history that relate s to chinese and english affairs?

e.g. daughter/son of Chris Patten

e.g. PM Edward Heath did a lot for China and the developing countries.

Or derive a name from a philosophy.

e.g. The Desiderata Poem -> Desidera, Desiday

e.g. Buddism -> Buddista, Buddistam,

e.g. Liberalsim -> Born Free

etc.

Edwina and Joy...you are both brilliant!

Some definite food for thought.

Personally I'm not sold on the "philosophy" naming convention - the child may end up with some hippy name like "Raindbow Peace" which I think would be a definitive formula for bullying and various childhood complexes.

Thinking about relating a name to Chinese and English affairs is interesting, though essentially I'm left with the same original problem.

Another option we considered is looking into taking parts of Chinese proverbs and using it as a name. For example, my Chinese name is "Jin Cheng" from the Chinese proverb "Jing Cheng Suo Zhi, Jin Shi Wei Kai" = "With great sincerity, you can even break through metal or rock".

I like your explanation and combination mike...Anyway for me I like the name Lwylyn for baby girl because it's unique and has no vowels...

Great, another one. How did you get her: mail order, chance encounter at <insert illegal immigrant hotspot>, chinese uni student? Or heaven forbid, did you hit the jackpot with a British born?
