A very sentimental and historic musical event is going to take place in Shanghai tomorrow (Saturday, 7th March 2009). Professor of Music, Yu Lina, will be playing the violin at a Concert to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of "The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto".

In 1959, at the age 18, Yu Lina, won instant acclaimed with her debut (world premiere) of the said violin concerto. Since her performance of the solo at its opening night fifty years ago, her name is in seperable from that piece.

I first heard this famous piece of music from a cassette tape when I was on a tour bus travelling from Beijing to the Great Wall in 1994 and liked it so much. I have since been a fan of "The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto".

In 1998, I was present at the Chinese Lunar New Celebrations in Leicester Square, London and saw Vanessa Mae playing on stage there a section from "The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto". You can listen to a short section of it vide:

Enjoy this clip (about 10 minutes) performed by Vanessa Mae and it is taken from her CD 'China Girl'.

(N.B. "The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto" was written in 1959 by two Chinese composers namely Chen Gang and He Zhanhan, while they were students of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. XuePing,

You must get some of your music recorded. Whether it sells or not does not matter, but in the years from now, you should be able to look back at this time of your life and enjoy your achievements.

There are recordings in China as 风暴未来. But for me enjoyment is in the present. The future can take care of itself.

I love this concerto. It's not easy to play because it's mostly pentatonic, not natural for classically trained musicians. I have a lot of respect for those who can play it well. On a personal level, I'm not a fan of Vanessa Mae, I think there are better virtuoso performances, like Song Zhong Guo.

What a beautiful piece, i can't believe it was written by students!

Apart from Professor Yu Lina, many renowned vilionists (e.g. Lu Si-Qing, Sheng Zhong-Guo, Nakako Nishizaki etc.) have performed in public the 'Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto', I also like very much the version played recently by the Chinese violinist, Bin Huang, who is regarded to be one of the most outstanding violinist from China and edeared herself to the musical world when at the age of fourteen she won the Junior Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poland. She has maintained international prominence, winning both the Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy (1994) and the Munich (ARD) International Music Competition (1999).

Watch and listen here to Bin Huang playing the whole of the Violin Concerto of the Butterfly Lovers vide:
