I was sad to learn the death of one of my favourite Chinese literary scholar, Yang Xianyi, an Oxford University graduate. He passed away on 23.11.09 at the age of 94. Earlier, his beloved wife, Gladys, had passed away in 1999 at the age 80. They both translated into the English language the famous Chinese Classic 'A Dream of Red Mansions'.
I was in China recently and saw this CCTV-9 Documentary on Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, and thought it might be of interest to readers in this Forum. Log onto: http://english.cctv.com/program/e_documentary/20091204/101182.shtml
Saw this obituaries of Yang Xianyi published by The Times (UK) newspaper on 12.12.09 vide: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article6953770.ece
I hope some day a film director will make a movie based on the life of this lovely couple. |

Thank you for this post Sunnyoyk.
I am rather touched and moved by watching the CCTV-9 Documentary on this charming and remarkable couple. Glady spoke such fluent Mandarin. Put me to shame for I don't speak that well. The death of her only son really affected her badly.
Sunnyoyk, I agree with you that, hopefully, some day some film-makers will make a movie on their story, and it will be an interesting and good story to tell, in my view. |
