seriously now, i think there is a point here.
it is difficult to know what elle is trying to say because his posts are so long and the majority of them involve verbatim quotes from online sources. most people don't have the time to read such long posts, or even if they do, cannot decide whether to invest the time to do so, because they cannot get an easy overview of what he is trying to say.
if you're reading this elle, then may i suggest a more effective way of promoting dialogue on the forum?
the beauty of the web is that content can so easily be linked to. just click the URL button, type or paste in the link into the post and then click the URL button again. this will surround the link with [url] ... [/url] tags, which tells the forum software to make a clickable link.
you can then structure your post along these lines:
----
i saw this interesting article on the web about topic x:
[url]link here[/url]
my thoughts about this topic are y. i agree/disagree with the article for the following reasons.
what are your thoughts? specifically, what do you think about this point or that point?
----
that way the posts will be shorter and therefore less initimidating, the source to which you refer to can be referred to easily, and within its original context, and it will be easier to distinguish your thoughts from those presented in the referenced source. |

I'm confused now  not sure why sandmanching is kicking off here as there's no mention of him at all, the question was referring to elles spamming
hiro's point about posting is valid, why spam the forums when you don't make any comment on the articles yourself? Everyone can cut and paste random articles without thought, maybe I should do the same with topics which take my fancy, or the rest of the members should do the same. If we did, we'd end up with a very messy forum with no point.
If elle is mod or site owner then how about give him/her his own thread where he/she can post all the drivel he/she likes, that way we can all go to the thread if we want to see what delights have been found elsewhere and replicated here or just go to the threads which we think we might find interesting. |

we don't want to drive people away even though its not our intentions to.l do mean it when l say the forum is duller without him...even though the reason is not so much because of what he posts but his conversations with others, especially when he talks about himself...make me laugh anyway.:p
oh to be british! my sense of humour is terribly cruel sometimes. mm... freedom of speech is a double edged sword...sense and sensibilities as well as crappity crap crap...as long as its harmless fun eh?...ahem...whistles and gets coat... |

Plagiarism is for the weak minded and ignorant who have no minds of their own to think with.

Ignorance of definitions is pure stupidity!
This forum is in English. Why don't you learn some English before telling others off? |

| elle, I think hiro has a valid point that some members find it hard to read your very long posts, just adding a link to your post should be adequate. |

|

Mr.Editor. I disagree completely. All those articles together weave the total picture of the Taoist concept, or the Buddhist concept. It is all interconnected, and unless the whole argument is read, the interconnections cannot be seen.
I appreciate that some people either are not interested in that topic or are cannot be bothered to read a lengthy article, then they should simply avoid reading it. It is impossible to get the ambience by referring to a link. The usual practice of providing a link is to prove authenticity or to provide a scource for further reading, and to signify that it is some other persons article. I come across a lot of long articles that do not interest me and I just skip it, but if I am interested in the topic, I WILL Read every word, or even copy it into my files.
So to criticize someone for lengthy articles is not a valid reason. Show me a rule, anywhere that says that a post muct not be more than 20 words or something? A good article is always appreciated by people interested in the subject.
I have also realized that the less anyone knows about a subject, the less interested he is of that subject. But the more you know about a subject, the more alive that subject becomes. So it does reflect the intellect of the persons who complain about a good article. If the article was rubbish, I would not quote it.
How much of what I have written, did you know about Taoism or of Confuciusism or about early Chinese culture? Are you not interested in it? Or did you already know all about it? Are you not interested in YOUR Culture? If not why did you have a Category titled "Culture"? Why don't you simply remove that category and state in your Rules, No Culture, No Religion, No Politics, No articles of more than 5 words, No serious subjects, No talk about Race, nNo talk about prejudices. Why don't you say only "Dim Sum Talk permitted"?
It sounds like you have a very elementary group here and you would like it to remain so. Free Speech not allowed, freedom of expression not allowed, only coffee shop chat allowed.
Let us know who you are catering to Mr. Editor. It is you who has raised the topic and it is I who wants clarification of the restrictions on this forum.
Were my articles in "Culture" abusive, insulting, incorrect, libellous, Off-Topic, misleading, flaming, offensive? Please criticize the articles, and do not cirticize elle for posting them for whatever reasons. Elle introduces thoughts, and ideas and history and culture. Have you had anyone else excepot ChinesePerson do this for your forum? Are there no other members who know enough about this topic to be able to discuss it intelligently? If so where are they? Is it a crime to introduce such subjects for thought? Have I offended you because I discuss Taoism or Buddhism? What is wrong with your values or your evaluation of the topics discussed. Would you rather it was NOT discussed? What do you want in this forum?
I have no problem about my verbal diarrohoeae, I post in more than the listed 95 groups, 7851 Posts in Google groups alone, and I have never had such criticisms as from you Mr. Editor. I am Moderator of 6 groups, one of which has 2063 members, and I have no problems about length of articles, or spamming or flaming, and I have them all under complete control. We do not tolerate any spaming or flaming or personal abuse or ad hominem attacks. So you are not speaking to someone who does not know about internet forums and internet etiquette. As I said, anyone can join the forum I mentioned and see if you can keep up with the pace there, I challenge you, and see if you survive. I have the same screen name there. We practice freedom of speech, but no abuse or ad Hominem attacks. When I was first appointed moderator there(one of three) it was worse than the 'wild west', but it is different place today. The flamers either left, or were banned. Abusive language has disappeared as well.
