Chinese population in UK

Does anyone know how many Chinese there are relative to other ethnic groups in the UK.

166,000 according to the last Census Office estimate in 1998.

I calculate that this means that the chinese account for 0.3% of the total population in the UK. The ethnic minorities make up about 6.5% of the overall UK population.

Bear in mind though that this is an estimate. The actual, or rather the declared numbers, will be published in late summer this year when the 2001 Census info is published. You can get the info by doing a search using the keyword 'chinese' on the Census Office website:

The report says there is 0.1 million of us. Of this number, 16 percent are under 16 yrs; 40 percent are between 16-34; 39 percent are between 35-64 (this does not add up 100 percent - I think the remainder are just unaccounted for/ not recorded).

That is pretty interesting. I would have thought the UK would have a larger Chinese population given the links to HK. As a comparison the US (pop. 300mm) has a 5% Asian population (predominately Chinese, Japanese, Korean). Chinese is probably about 1 % of the total Population of the US.
