Apologies for such a general posting but I don’t know where to start and would be grateful for some advice! My partner and I have decided to move out to Hong Kong (on a whim), we are currently thinking for 6-12mths but really quite flexible. We do not have employment secured as of yet and therefore I have been advised to apply for work visas when we get out there after we have secured some form of employment. The issues that I would be very grateful for some help with are:

(1) Where to live: as we will not have employment secured or be sure how long we are staying the ideal would be a flexible arrangement, in a nice/interesting area but we will be quite restricted on budget for obvious reasons! Any suggestions on areas, agencies, temporary stay residences, costs etc would be brilliant.

(2) Employment: I am a qualified lawyer and my partner is an engineer with financial and compliance experience. I would be very grateful for some assistance as to how to go about finding work, recommended agencies, etc.

(3) Any advice on any matter that you think we should consider would be gratefully received.

Thank you very much,

S

ps Forgot to say we are both 25 if that helps with any advice.

S,

(1) Try looking at these websites for reference:
http://www.gohome.com.hk/english/home.asp
http://www.midland.com.hk/eng/living_in_hk/renting.shtml

Two major property agents are Centaline and Midlands.
In terms of where to live, areas such as "Mid-levels", "Sheung Wan", "Happy Valley" tends to be favoured by ex-pats or overseas born/raised Chinese. There are so many interesting places to consider, but they can be quite local.

There is a growing number of temporary residences, serviced apartments available and costs range from around HK$15K upwards.

Be prepared for tiny, tiny apartments.

(2) You will find all the major recruitment agencies in HK... Michael Page, Robert Half, Hudsons, Hays etc.
There is also a supplement for job vacancies in Saturdays' "South China Morning Post".

(3)Things to consider and watch out for:
Language barrier, food, weather (v. hot and humid in summer), busy streets and crowds, pollution, lack of greenery and parks, and the "rudeness" of the local people (but I think this is more to do with the difference in culture and not intentional).

I spent the last 4 yrs in HK. In the end, I loved being there, but it did take a while to adjust and settle into the local way of life. Hope this helps.

Kevin
