At last, news is flowing out about what is/has been happening with Oriental City. Sounds to me a chaotic steam rolled affair:-
End of the road for real China town? (2008-05-22)

We as a community needs to make continuous effort to strive for greater cohesion and to participate in political life in Britain.

Looks like it might be a bit late for Oriental City now, hopefully there'll be another like it cropping up soon somewhere.
Good luck to all the residents in finding new places. |

I just returned from the Oriental City. It is fantastically vibrant, so I took loads of photos, and talked to a few shop keepers. Pity it is going to shut down in a few more days. The amazing thing is so many businesses still have no place to move to.
The Oriental City is such a vibrant and spacious place that it would eclipse the Gerrard St. China Town hands down, if only it was more publicised. |

Great pics Edwina, bitterly disappointed that it's closing down and you're right, it beats Chinatown hands down.
If only there was a rich Chinese business person with enough money to purchase a similar property with units that could be rented out to the Chinese community
Do we know if it's closed already? I know they're supposed to close this weekend 30 May being the last day, might pop down on Saturday for one last visit. |

Yeap, this Sunday will be the very last day of the Food Court.
So get down there!

I was there today and the whole place was just buzzing... More so than usual i must say, which just makes the whole thing even more sad for me. I believe this was the last bastion of a truly culturally diverse place in London. Nowhere else is there such accessible food for so many array of different people of different cultures, everyone eats together, sharing tables, talking to strangers and all suffering that same god awful heat that gets trapped in that place! The experience of eating there on a busy afternoon is rivalled only in asia for its intensity and sheer chaos.
I really hope there will be an OC2 somewhere in London as a replacement, it would be an awful shame to lose such a magnificent stage for all people to eat, talk and share together. Where else is there such cultural harmony in London? |

Managed to get down there one last time on Saturday, shame to see everyone closing down. Couldn't figure out was worse, the people doing the redevelopment causing the closure of the place, or the parasites known as bargain hunters preying on the shopkeepers misfortune and trying to haggle things down to a pittance
Sad to see it go as I used to go there when it first opened as the Yohan plaza, plus it's the only proper food court in North London oriental style.
There was a notice about a place opening up in Bayswater but have forgotten the url for it can anyone remember or did anyone see this notice?
In the meantime, found a couple of pics of when OC was in better condition

Ex-Vag,
Your photos on Flickr is now public property. It is the museum for the Oriental City. Don't you ever delete them or you'll face the consequences.

| Rumour has it that some of the residents of OC, a good proportion of them, are moving to a site in Cricklewood. Anyone heard of this and are there any details? |

I haven't hear anything ex-VAG, but when I was there, I spoke to someone who said they are working with the landlord to find a place.
The new center might be quite ambitious, because it isn't just the center that is to be re-developed, but the whole area.
May be Manchester's Trafford Center is a foretaste of what is to come. Have a look at my photos at the Trafford Center:-

Tried to delete previous post in another thread but couldn't so here it is again
Anyone got news on this, heard from someone today that due to the current economic climate Oriental city will re-open as it was as there's no cash for the redevelopment?
Questions are, where and who are they going to get back, previous tenants whom they paid compensation to? New tenants who might not be as successful? |

This sounds like really good news ex-VAG
The new shopping centre just opened near Hammersmith is already in trouble. Our new shopping center in High Wycombe is so pricey & clinical I'm sure it won't do much to generate a vibrant community atmosphere.
I expect the Oriental Center will re-open when the talking are done and contracts signed.
Nice to see you posting again ex-VAG.

Hi Edwina, did you miss me?
I certainly hope the rumours are true, a new OC would be welcomed back with open arms, though I'm not sure how the Wing Yip down the road would feel, they've just opened/expanded the restaurant there. Anyone been, any reviews?
More news and rumours as it happens.... |
