To Chinese members:
On a scale of 0 to 10, to what extent do you feel you are a part of British society? 0 meaning you don't feel like part of UK society at all and feel totally seperate (alienated, maybe) from the idea of 'Britain' or 'the UK; , whilst 10 meaning you feel very much like a member of British society - a part of this country.
I'd like to point out that a high number doesn't mean you feel 'less Chinese' and I'm not saying feeling British means you can't feel Chinese too - this isn't a 'choose your side' question. I just want to guage whether people think they are part of the society around them or whether they feel totally isolated from it.
Personally I would say 8 or 9, probably because I was born and raised over here. There will always be whilst cultural difference though, so I don't think I could ever say '10'.
Obviously this doesn't change the fact I'm 100% proud of my roots and Chinese heritage too! |

It is a good approach to get a broad sample of people's feelings, but often statistics don’t really show the true picture. It is important to know the reasons, then people can work out the problems together and have the potential to resolve them.
This is just a suggestion. I feel you need to include one more question.
2) Why?

This part where you have given a rating, followed by a simple answer. But all I'm suggesting is to encourage people to answer in a bit more detail. |

Myeslf, I am half-Cantonese and half-Scottish, so although I 'fit in' with the British culture, having lived here for most of my life, I will never fully integrate... Some things that people will never accept or gel with, no matter how many cultural lessons you throw at them... Likewise, if I went back to HK, tho I was raised there for the first five years of my life, I've become 'too British'. But that isn't the point, I realise, heh...
Anyways, I'd say a 9, but like sp, I feel that I will never fit in completely. There are certain ways that I do things, things I eat, turns of phrase... I think the main sticking points are things like customs and festivals, a few people still don't understand that they're an integral part of oriental life...
