yup -
1) Chinese kids are outstripping English kids on their studies and we rank among the highest straight A students out of all the ethnic minorities
2) We're so hip that Chinese pple are getting into the movies. So much that white girls are using make up to make themselves look more oriental for auditions. Yuen Woo Ping, John Woo as well as a host of actors/actresses are Chinese
3) Jimmy Choo is Chinese and everyone who is female wants one of his creations and more if they can afford it!
5) We're lifting trophies and gold medals in major sporting events and even US has gotten into the act by getting Chinese sportspple to represent her at the Olympic games. Check out Michelle Kuan - US iceskater!!
6) Even in the Uk we're storming the adverts - quite a few ads in the uk are featuring Chinese pple - and not just on Chinese New Year advertising food and martial arts!
7) Chinese culture is hot - think of the Hollywood craze for Chinese Martial arts, Feng Shui, Chinese medicine, Buddhism, oriental minimalism and interior design. |

pork scratchings,
What you just said makes me cringe. 'There are chinese people in UK adverts'. Is that a joke? The stero typical everything to do with chinese is martial arts or noodles? Jimmy choo shoes? Does all this make you feel good about yourself? seeing Jet Li or jacki chan in some silly films? Chinese with low or no self esteem for what ever reason will see your points as 'encouragement'. People like myself who actually got some pride dont need these silly gimmicks or fads by white people to instill cultural pride. I came here to UK at age 8 so maybe iam different to you BBC's needing this BS from white society. I got my pride from my parents, i dont need a commercial to give me that. |

I was born in the UK and have seen how attitudes to Chinese pple change over the yrs as i was growing up. The change has been a positive one and in part due to the positive portrayal of Chinese pple in the media and popular press. It is shame that u take for granted how the achievement of Chinese pple in the public eye have influenced how we are all treated by English pple.
Stereotype happens and as long as we are seen in a positive light I don't have a problem with it. It wasn't so long ago that Chinese pple were seen as not good enough to do high paid jobs, get on TV, front an ad campaign, represent the UK/US in sports - would u prefer if things didn't change and we are STILL seen as fit only for menial jobs?
If u don't like the stereotype - u urself have to get off ur butt and change it. Now dat's having self esteem.
I have immense pride in my culture and it pleases me dat my culture is getting recognition in the world at large. Perhaps u prefer if English pple continue to think Chinese culture as backward and Chinese pple as inferior to white pple? Are u proud of being a nothing? Would u be proud?
U don't get pride just from ur parents - u get pride by the clothes u wear and the society u live in. This happens to be a white society. Would u feel this pride if u were ignored for decent jobs and told u are only good enough to be a cleaner? Would u feel pride if u were told u can't live in a nice area because u are a chink? How about getting beat up and being last to get treated in hospital because u are not white? All this happened at the time when my parents came over to the UK. Would u feel proud to be treated as a second class person?
The pple i have listed earlier are trailblazers in changing the perception of Chinese pple in white society. My parents are trailblazers too - they set up a business and worked hard to send me to uni, so that I too can break the stereotype of menial worker.
If wot i said makes u cringe, ur comments are just as disappointing. Chinese pple who fight on our behalf for world recognition derserve our support.
Not to be scorned and undermined by those who's only skill is complaining and doing nothing to make things better for all of us. |

This is the reason I registered myself on this website. To reply and to say one thing about stereotypes.
Ever have an African friend? And call him a nigger jokingly? You will get a punch.
Some stereotypes are just bad. Here are 2 I hate so much.
1) Chinese men have smaller dick.
2) All Chinese food is greasy, full of meat, and to play safe, order sweet and sour. Not to mention, you never know what is it the dish. Cat meat etc...
And on those that seems to provide positive notions: such as martial arts, sexy girls...
I hate them too. Recently, I got called "Jackie Chan" eventhough I was a girl on the street. I called the guy a racist, and walked away. I also had people standing on one foot imitating karate kid all the time. It's extremely annoying. The media wants to sell things that the people what to see -- Cool martial arts from chinese people who can't SPEAK. I don't think we should say it is the cool thing that makes us proud. You should be proud on being yourself, not what the media put onto you.
The sexy pretty girl thing -- I hate it so much. It is not only within the Chinese culture, but include the oriental in general, Japanese, Thai, etc. I don't know how other girls feel about this, I do not want some sleezy white guy trying to "try" me out, coz I am exotic, but to threat me as a person.
Stereotypes are subtle racism. Because somebody believe in the stereotypes of us, makes us have to deal with comments like "Do Oriental people eat dogs?", "You know KungFu, do you?", and of course, "Chinese girls are just sex goddess." (I got that on the bus).
I say we do not tolerate the stereotypes, because it is ain't funny. This is racism too. They can be treated with humour, if you respect the person who made the comment. But, I do not see the reason to laugh at ourselves, when being Chinese is great, just because we have a refine language, refine literature and art of 3000 years, we have many different cuisine, many thought of philosophies, and we understand that subtle means of comformity help in a long way to maintain peace in people relationship.
Learn your roots, and you will be proud. _________________ EM |

| We're in a unique position to sample from two great cultures. It's not always a smooth ride but I feel pretty lucky to be British Chinese. |
