Hi,

I was just wondering if there's any first generation Chinese who decided to stay here came with the same reason as I did. I decided to "come back" --(bcoz I was born here) to UK because I wanna runaway from the "good life" I have in Asia. I know a couple of people who are like that too. (Bored of staying home watching MTV and eating 5 meals by the street a day)

I know in the past, the reason was always to runaway from poverty. However, after the boom of education system in countries like HongKong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and even Thailand. We see more East Asians in higher education finding a job in the West after graduation and thus settling down. I have friends from rich background, who need to prove something to the parents and decided to stay on. I am aware of the people in Wall Streets that grew up in China, Malaysia, Singapore or HongKong, as my sister works in Finance in NYC now. I am curious on the reasons for the Fobies(Fresh of the boat -- though I prefer the word FOP - Fresh of the Plane)to settle in the UK, and is there many highly educated East Asians migrating here?

If there is more highly educated East Asians settling down in the UK, there will be a strong positive implication on the economic performance of this minority group. I find it interesting to see how East Asian will thrive or not thrive in the next decade in the UK.

Thanks for any respond.

u need to clarify some of ur points - first generation Chinese in Uk usually refer to the generation dat came over to UK in the '50/'60, who are my parents and grandparents generation. Chinese who are born in Uk tend to be second generation Chinese or British Born Chinese (BBC).

Both these groups have different reasons for being in the Uk and equally different reasons for wanting to return to the land of their grandparents/parents.

Which one -1st or 2nd generation are u talking about?

Sorry...due to circumstances of being lack of sleep and writing this message while at work; slip of wrong words.

I would like to know those people who are the most recent immigrants. They do not grow up here, so therefore not 2nd generation. If you say the first generation are those who came in 50/60's. Well...I am sorry I was a bit confused there...but...

Well, I just want to know about the people who are just FOBS, those who came in the late 1990's; who decided to try their luck in the UK during the Asian Economic Crisis; or those who studied and decided to stay on. The reasons they come here, and how educated they are.

Of course, illegal immigrants will not be answering my questions... *sigh*...
but anyone who can just comment, or share their experience....
