I may be who you think I am....
I never wanted to learn Mandarin, but my wife keeps telling me she does. Her first language is English, Second is Malay (which I do keep meaning to learn properly, but have picked up quite a bit). Cantonese is her third langauge.
My attempts at any Chinese have been laughable. I just can't get the tones. We both agree that it is probably a folorn hope that I will ever get it, although I can understand some things very occasionally. Malay is the language I have been promising myself I will learn.
Both my wife and I have made lots of effort to understand each others cultures better, but the language is not something that really prevents that as English is our shared first language.
The most difficult aspect was that we had no Chinese friends in the UK, all hers being in S E Asia, or Australasia. However the internet we met a handful of people and have since had a growing circle of Chinese friends. |

Forgive me. I had foolishly made the assumption that Mandarin was your good Lady's first language..
The dreaded Tones will always get us Gwailos <g> Curiously I find myself quite reasonably attuned to Cantonese tones, but totally lost when it comes to the supposedly simpler 'mandarin'..... though I can re-produce neither to any great effect (despite an inherrant mastery of the glottal stop)...... I can_just_ about be understood in canto...
A question of immersion? Perhaps your semi-casual attainment in Malay says much about the way we learn as opposed to the methods used to teach us.....
Interestingly my 7 Y/O can make herself well understood in Canto! Her aunties (my foster sisters) have a very basic grasp themselves. But with the help of some basic language CD's and my sisters she's quite able to walk into the Chinese supermarket and announce herself in tones that have the old ladies behind the counter ooh-ing and ahh-ing in wonder! We had a bit of a family gathering at New-Year and Amanda was holding quite a respectable exchange with some of the old folks in a sort of broken english-come-canto..... children are such ready learners!
I guess you and I are just past it ???<GGG>
Stow has links to a couple of Universitys and colleges in the PRC. Though there's no sponsored programme for it I know a command of basic mandarin would stand me in good stead. But. whilst I could just about blunder my way 'round in Canto I think I'm in the same position as yourself when it comes to 'mandarin'...... I've a reasonable musical ear. I know a little Canto....but somehow I just can't quite hear those 'mandarin' tones.... Let alone repeat them...... thing is I know no-one who speaks 'mandarin'!
The immersion thing again <g>
They do say though that if you're going to learn another a combination of English and 'mandarin' will get you through to most folk on the earth..... |

amy,
you are right, I wont be taking rejected chinese girls from white men. LOL
Its funny but I often ask white guys if they would go out with white girls that have been with black men and I get exactly the same answer.
Princess Diana is a very good example of this and we all know what happened to her. |

Who says I didn't reject them? :o) There is such a thing as equal rights for women in the field of love. So you're not only racist but misogynistic then?! |

Hey, eyecandy just read your posts. They're great!
I highly recommend you to join the ChineseNationalAlliance discussion board you would fit in there real fine and the people there have the same mentality and ideals as you do. I think you are just wasting your time discussing such important ethnic purity matters here, the people here are far too liberal and have no sense of what it should like being real 'Chinese' person like you.

Presumably you have few teeth left then.
What rubbish, you quite obviously don't ask white men this. Unless you frequent BNP or KKK meetings. Your average white bloke would respond by telling you to **** off. |

gwai lo,
I was in a club on sat night and was in the 'black' room which had the typical mixture of mostly indians, black guys and white females. You will hardly see white men in this rnb room. You will see this in most clubs up and down the country.
As for discussing race issues, I do this all the time. I not only discuss the black man white girl scenario but also indian girls dating muslim men (another taboo subject).
Gwai lo...If you have any indian mates, ask them what they think of indian girls dating muslim men. U will get the SAME answer every time.
Final point. My initial question has not been answered. Chinese guys, would you date/marry a chinese girl who has been with a white man or black man? |

I profess no expertise on club culture.
I am a little old to be clubbing.
I have a number of Indian friends, some of whom ARE muslim, some of whom are seikhs, but the majority of whom are hindu. And your statement just demonstrates that you are lying about what you discuss with whom. If you actually undertood the first thing about Indians or Indian culture you may have discussed Sikh or Hindu girls dating muslims, but not Indian girls doing so.
Anyway, I am not here to entertain trolls. |

gwai lo, youre really not important enough for me to lie to u.
There are very few Indian muslims here in england and so Indians are thought of as non muslims. Even Indians themselves refer to people of pakistani/bangladeshi origins as muslims.
youre wasting my time now and this will be my last post on this subject. |

Indians are thought of as non muslims by whom exactly? Not by Indians thats for sure. Every Indian is well aware that there are millions of Indian Musilms, so the only people who think differently know nothing of Indians or thier culture.
Most Pakistani's and Bangladeshi's are muslim, Pakistan and Bangladesh are Islamic nations. However not all are and whilst an awful lot of Hindu Indians will refer to people from those nations as muslim that isn't entirely true and more reflects the deep seated prejudices that Hindus and Muslims from that region have.
As I said, if you had wriiten of discussion relationships between Hindus and Moslems I may have believed you. But you wrote of Indian/Muslim relationships and no indian would equate Indian with automatically meaning non muslim.
Look, lets not debate it here. I can't prove this and neither can you. Neither of us are Indian or Muslim. How about we debate it in person. I have a good friend who is Indian (Hindu), a pillar of British Indian society....even has an MBE. You bring along your Indian freinds who you discuss this with and I'll bring along my friend. I reckon that we can sell tickets and my Indian friend is the founder and patron of a charity providing medical facilities in Africa.....I think I can persuade him if he can make some money for his charity.
You get the chance to expose my ignorance and my friend gets to raise a few bob for a worthy cause. How about it? I am sure a few people who use the site would love a good passionate debate about race.
Anyone prepared to pay a fiver for a ticket? |

I assume that means you are unable to argue your point amy longer?
However, if I am mistaken my offer was serious and still stands. There is an opportunity to prove you are right and I am wrong if you want to exploit it. |

I do agree that Eyecandy is fully entitled to his opinions, but I do find it very sad that he holds those views at all. He says that he deeply regrets ever having slept with a white woman and that it was a mistake - what a shame. That he wouldn't sleep with a woman who'd been with a white guy because she'd "stooped so low". So white people are trash? I can only imagine that at some point in his life he's been horribly tormented by white people, because that kind of hatred is truly shocking and surely must come from somewhere.
The great shame of it is that it seems as though everyone gets discriminated against for some reason, and if it's not race then it's something else instead. I'm the "white girl" in my marriage, and we've been very fortunate in that we have never been discriminated against because of our interracial relationship, only because of our height difference! |
