| It seemed like any other night. I had finished my coursework at 12am in the morning. I felt great and i was looking forward to handing my work in the next morning. I was thinking about the next day and what i need to do to get ready, and that i should prepare, and was thinking about what i would do when i get back home. I printed off my work, then i headed off in the dark. My house was not too far from the university where im studing at. I knew that it could be dangerous, but i walked pass at this hour many times before and usually nothing happens around here. I knew it was late but i had to go home somehow. The road was the safest route to my house. The main road was well lit and from there i would turn into another street, where it isn't busy. Surely if something was to happen, it would on a deserted road at night where there are no people. I dont have any expensive possession, but i think maybe i will get my mobile nicked or if im really unlucky the assailant would nick my USB with my coursework on it, and i would be really annoyed. Not about being robbed, because my coursework has been nicked, which took me more or less about two weeks to do. I was heading home and I wanted something to eat. I headed towards the usual kebab shop on the safe road. A car drove pass slowly and someone in the car shouted something. I turned and looked, he said something in french or pretending to be french and laughed, then drove off. I knew that it was late and i didn't want any trouble, so i walked on and kept my mouth shut. I spent the next few minutes pondering why someone would do that. Feeling annoyed i continued my journey and it began to rain a little, i turned my hood and put it over my head. I brought my usual at the kebab shop, and began to walk home. I popped into the shop, and brought my large bottle of diet coke to go with my food. I couldnt wait to get home so i can nibble and fill my belly, and take a long deserving rest after a hard week. I continued up the road. Some people walked past, but i didn't take any notice. I continued like any other night on the same road, then a white man blocked the way i was walk, jumped and flying kicked me to the floor. It happend so fast that i was stunned. I flew flat on my back with my bag on the side. I landed and I hit the back of my head. Luckily i was wearing my hoody and that reduce the impact. If i wasn't wearing it, I reckon i could have been seriously injuried my head. I instantly got up, because i was taught not to stay on the floor in a fight. The man attempted to go for me and i thought he was going to hit me when i was down. The man was white and he was around 6 foot. Definitely a chav by the clothing he was wearing. His friend was filming the entire thing. He thought it was amusing. I got up and started remonstrating with him. I had a few words with him and called him a 'fucking chav' then i asked him what was that for. He said 'i deserved it'. I began to get aggressive, but i knew i was in some danger, so id push him away told him what he was. I was scared he might follow me home. He ripped off my bag and began to beat up my bag in a complete manic rage, he must off got offended because i stood up for myself. I dont think that is what he expected from a chinese girly fem-boy, then when i tried to get it back. i went for my phone to dial 999 but he grabbed it and began to push it away from my face, so i put it back into my pocket. I was all by myself on a busy road and I thought i should walk away, which is the best thing i could do in this situation. He wouldnt let me have my bag back, and began to push me into the oncoming traffic. Some people walked passed 2 women and 2 men. I thought i was in luck, but they walked passed like nothing happened. I asked them to help me, actually i pleaded with them to help me, but they kept walking. After a long disussion with one of them, he decided to help me to get my bag back and the other friend helped also urged by his friend. If they was not there i think i could have been in alot of danger. I asked them to call the police but they didnt want to. Luckily one of them managed to get my bag off the man that kicked me to the ground. It took them 4 minutes to get it back. To me it must of took an eternity. Luckily i had a sore neck and i didn't lose any of my possession. The people that helped me lived nearby, so they didn't want the police to get involved. So i went home, feeling battered and in shock. I knew i should of, called the police, when it happened. I got home told my house mates, and they said that i should call the police, and i did. They never caught the people that did it, but i did see them leaving a police car on the same road the next day. Next time i should be a little more careful. It was during this time i got home and telling my housemate what happened that i had a discussion with my chinese housemate. He mentioned that it has happened to him before in Norwich. I have been attacked before in the club for no reason, but never on the streets. Actually the guy claimed he was on cocaine that he could do whatever he liked. He punched me in the face. Thats only one of the stories. I was wondering have any chinese men had any forms of racist violence or if it is common for chinese men to receive it in this country. I know alot of chinese men here that seems to get into alot of trouble where im from. Most are usually my chinese male friends. Sometimes its just agro from english pedestrian, but in my experience, most of its when its in the nightclub or bars, when things do get a little mouthy. I know it is never me that ever starts it. Why cant i go to places without having any racial harassment in reference to my colour. Racism is not acceptable, but what can i do. Is this just random acts of violence or that we are just easy pickings for white people. Anyone has any real life stories. I know we all have them. |

Hi Kong
This is a very serious incident especially when they have taken pictures of you. You need to inform your course tutor at the university what has happened and asked to receive some form of counseling. To go through the incident and provide explanation of what happened. This would seriously affect your trust and relationship with other people in the future. You should not feel ashame to ask for help it is what the staffs are there for. Do get back if you do not get the help you needed. |

Hi Kong,
Im glad you OK and went to police. This sort of thing is not acceptable in UK and is taken seriously even if we not believe it.
Also please do what Joybetluck say. Maybe a warning to other sudents is necessary. It could be worse for some one else.
Take care. |

Hi Kong,
Sad to read your episode. I do not think it is just because you are Chinese, more like you are different and in the wrong place at the wrong time. The hyenas of this world will always be there. Although the streets look civilised in the day, it is really a concrete jungle. We just have to learn the survival skills as to when humanity lived in the jungle.
Yes, you need to inform the police. At least the police are given the chance to do their duty. If the police did nothing, they are accountable to their paymasters and to themselves and to you ( if you wish to follow up what the police did after your report)
If does not only happen to Chinese guys. It happened to me too. Three drunken guys came into my restaurant and demanded to be served. I refused to serve them. I could see their intention was to intimidate me because I barred one of them one year before because my English staff refused to serve him because of his loutish behaviour. I held open the door and politely asked them to leave. They refused. I used the broken record technique and politely but assertively asked them to leave. One of them, an ex-boxer put his fist right two inches from my face. He asked me to send the triad to beat him up. His mates demonstrated 'kung-fu' gestures. I stood my ground and did not finch from his fists. Finally they decided they had only two options, beat me up or leave. They decided to leave but this ex-boxer guy on his way out, spit at me. They left. I telephoned the police and reported the incident. A spit is 'common assault' just like a 'fist'.
The case went to Court. These guys were 'white'. The magistrate 'partly believed' their submission that I 'unreasonsably' refused them service. However, that ex-boxer guy had to stand in front of the Court to show what a hero he was. He was fined over £400. For a whole year, he would phoned at 2 am in the morning or the dead of night in order to terorised me. I logged the incident to the police. But because he was using mobiles not registered in his name, the police could not do anything. However, his mobiles were disconnected at least twice.
The scums of this world are just that scums. If you allowed them to affect your prespectives of life and get angry and bitter, the only person that is harmed and continued to suffer is yourself. For every scum you meet there are tens of lovely 'white' people.
Learn and sharpen your survival skills, and face the world with humour, kindness and humanity; and you will receive the same in abundance. |

Try avoiding working so late at the uni if possible. Most attacks I read about happen late at night.
Is it possible to work on a laptop/computer from home ? |

Carry a knife. Know how to use it. Stick in leg.
I used to walk around a lot in the night during uni and never got attacked or even verbally abused. The fact that I looked like a paranoid nutter could be something to do with it. Just stay on your guard and watch out for "traps" - ambush points, corners, stuff like that. Always be prepared to fight. Chances are when you encounter someone like that you're not going to get out through witty comebacks.
I also get most racial abuse in clubs and pubs too - especially when talking to women. Obviously they're jealous, and I tell them so. They tend to hang around til my group leaves, but considering we always organise a taxi to arrive as soon as we leave the door, they never had the chance to carry out something of consequence.
You weren't clear to where the bloke came from; surely you saw him coming, or was he from behind? Sounded like he just popped out from your post.
Obligatory prostitute part; most parlours close at 1AM, so you could've taken refuge there instead of a kebab shop. |

Hi Kong, really sorry to hear about your awful experience. I wasn't there so i can't give an opinion as to whether it was racially motivated. However, i am willing to bet it was more likely wrong place and wrong time. 'Chavs' tend to pick on anyone just to make themselves feel better because their lives usually are so pathetic and meaningless.
Please ignore Jeff's advice to carry a knife, it is likely that you would come out worst off. Best thing to do is to try not to walk around on your own late at night, but that advice goes to all guys and not just Chinese.
Take care.

Well obviously you would lose the slim advantage of carrying one if presented to the attacker at long distance.
And your advice is hardly of any use, "avoid walking around alone at nights", when the guy specifically said he had to finish coursework late at night. That REALLY helps him when his head is bashed around. |

It seems that physical assault incidents are on the rise in Sheffield. I'm not sure if they were all racially motivated but these pathetic thugs and scumbags probably feel that they can easily get away with bullying foreigners.
A little more than a month ago, a Chinese female student had her face punched into a pulp by a group of teenage mobsters outside the Opal 2 flats near Edward Street. It happened in broad daylight (between 5-6pm) but nobody came to her rescue. There should definitely be some people who walked by as there are several blocks of student flats and a Tesco Express in that area. Why are people so indifferent to crime committed before their eyes? The worse thing is, the police and university authority were silent about this and failed to issue safety advice to students living in that area. I view this as an act of cover-up. As far as I know, only some of the Opal 2 residents and their friends are aware of this incident.
People's indifferent attitude and police incompetence are the real culprits who encourage more violent acts! |

| I think judging from your first post, theres an element of racism and being at the wrong place at the wrong time, the latter more so concerning the attack on you....Personally even tho I'm quite street wised, a bit like yourself I dont feel that I can completely freely go and do anything I want in this country, without thinking of my own safety..Its a sad state of affairs... |

In this day and age more people should seriously consider taking up some form of martial art. At least if you have to confront someone with a knife you would know how to disarm them.
I've been in fights where race was the motive (calling me a chink to provoke me). It's not unusual. |

Martial Art is of questionable use. For example Karate may hinder your defense as you are conditioned in the sporting arena not to deliver a fatal blow. A self-defense course adapted for use on the street would be more relevant.
Drug fuel attack is especially dangerous and defense technique has to be revised every now and than.
The best defense is avoidance. If you are in a fight than you have already failed. |
