The Way of Sa (Times Magazine - 21st August 2008)

Sa Dingding has made a tremendous impression on the west. It could be the 24-year-old Chinese singer's florid costumes. Perhaps it's her music videos, which feature psychedelic graphics and monk striding to fashionable breakbeats. Or maybe it's her songs, which incorporate Buddhist mantras, traditional Chinese instruments and electronical....( To read on, log onto: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1834454,00.html ) |

| Yes, Edwina, I went to see Sa Dingding's show which I enjoyed very much. She sang most of the songs from her 'Alive' album. She also sang a new song to be released in her next album. Hope she will come back to perform again in the UK next year (2009). |

i visited the Sa Dingding's site and was slightly puzzled by what i thought was an unusual sound mix. i was certain that i recognised the male voice in the background and wondered why such warlike expressions were being juxtaposed with "holy incence".
how foolish of me!!!! i had a water margin episode running on internet explorer in the background and Sa Dingding's site running on firefox!!!
on a more serious note, i also noticed an appeal on site for earthquake victims by the British Red Cross. I have been trying to find out for years why they always make these appeals when there is the INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS at work. it is true that the British Red Cross have branches overseas but these branches, 8 in all I think, are on British Overseas Territories so far as i am aware there is not a british red cross branch operating in china.
if i gave £100 to the British Red cross and £100 to the INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS i would be interested to know what proportion of this would go to the overseas victims in both cases.
i once phoned them up about an appeal they had on television for a disaster in the middle east and asked why they were using pictures showing the work of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent in that region and they hung up on me. i was only being curious, as i wondered how well an ambulance emblazened with BRITISH RED CROSS would fare in iraq or afganistan.
In July 2005 the ICRC (not the British Red Cross) opened a regional delegation in Beijing, following the signing of an agreement with the authorities of the People's Republic of China. China was previously covered from the ICRC's regional delegation in Bangkok.
The new delegation also covers the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea and Mongolia.
The ICRC’s main activities in the region are the promotion and implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and cooperation with national Red Cross societies. This includes helping the two Red Cross societies on the Korean peninsula to improve the situation of families separated since the Korean War. The ICRC also runs limb-fitting centres in China's Yunnan Province and in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The organization also has a Chinese-language website (www.icrc.org/chi) and produces Chinese-langauge publications to foster interest in and understanding of humanitarian issues and IHL amongst Chinese-speakers worldwide.
i should say there is a Red Cross Society of China based in Shanghai which is recognised by the IRCS committee, and a separate one in Taiwan. I dont know if this makes any sense in economic terms whether it is better to give to one rather than the other??? anyway i need to go as i have another porcupine to pluck. |

Kang,
I remember being informed that the 'Red Cross' is one charity, that the government of the relevant country picks up the 'tab' for the administrative/operational costs. I understand all contribution collected are spelt in actual humantarian work. So this is one charity I would normally contribute to.
If anyone knows better, please update us. |
