|
|
my dearest forum friends...
I have been shortlisted for a competition to design a mural for London China Town that addresses to the history and heritage of china town and celebrate the current East Asian diversity and dynamism of the area(the brief). If I win I will have funding to make the piece and it will be there for 2 years!
Public voting has just started. Your support to me will be very much appreciated!
How to vote?
Just click the link below and and go to 'Vote for Horse & Dolphin Yard (Mural)' to vote. My proposal is the bowl of rice!! I really like it as the public (incl. you) would be invited to take part. Hence, it is one for the public, created by the public. I hope you would like it too!

What exactly have I proposed?
China Town
At a glance, China Town is a place connected to Chinese and eating. It is full of restaurants and markets, people go there to eat or to get the ingredients to prepare food.
Look closer, China Town is a living library. It is not just important for Chinese but different communities from East Asia. It inspires cultural exchange among these communities through taste on the palette, simple day-to-day living, community events, festivals and street performances, etc. As a British Chinese, I feel that it is a special place for me to discover, rethink and reinforce my own culture and identity.
The Mural
I would like the Mural to tell this story of China Town, to show the public its charm on different levels- from far and near.
From far, the mural illustrates a simple item that is connected to most East Asian Communities and China Town- a bowl of rice.
We are well known for the love of our food and rice is a common staple among most East Asian Communities. It is a simple, yet important base for a huge variety of taste- just like China Town.
Look closer, the mural is a mosaic of photos. Each photo tells a story- a story about China Town. I would like it to inspire a journey of discovery through its making and viewing.
It is a piece of art for the public, created by the public.
I would invite the East Asian Communities and local historian groups to share their memories by submitting old photos of China Town. Remember the last time you came across some old photos and the good old days put a little smile on your face? This is an opportunity to encourage them to revisit the past and treasure the history and heritage.
To embrace the present, they will also be invited to submit photos to show us how they enjoy their lives now, in connection with China Town. I will collect the photos and produce the mosaic digitally to show China Town’s diversity and dynamism. It will be printed and mounted like a giant painting in the gallery.
In total, 1888 photos will be used. In Cantonese, it is pronounced as ‘Yat Fat Fat Fat‘. ‘Yat’ means ‘day’ and ‘Fat’ means ‘good fortune’. ‘Fat Fat Fat’ means ‘a lot of fortune’. I hope this mural would not only celebrate the pride of China Town (on time with the Olympic Games), but also bring prosperity to the business there, more each day!

ermhh,
A bowl of rice would look just like a bowl of rice advertment for a restaurant if you put it in the streets, especially near any China town. |

| I suggest a dynamic art mural built from LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), then you can put as much complexity and as many overlaid pictures as you can afford. |

I like the steaming big lump of turd in the middle of Chinatown. Oh wait that's the pagoda isn't it? |
