hiya
I know that the Chinese community in the UK come from varied backgrounds and I noticed the thread about hakka people asking if there were any hakkaese on the boards.

i was wondering about the origins of the rest of our BBC community...are the rest of us HK Chinese? what languages do people speak?

I'm originally HK chinese and learning mandarin currently, as are most of my friends but i also know some Mauritus Chinese ...

Born and raised in England to HK parents (mum is from new territories).
I manage to speak really bad Cantonese, don't really get to practice much. And pretty much illiterate.

Father a hakka and mother a Chiu Chau, not the most harmonious combination!

As a result, I have to say people here in HK that I have hakka origins. They then immediately associate hakka with the small house policy introducted in about 1972 where hakka people (indigenous people) have a right to build a three storey house in the New Territories when they are allocated a plot of land.
