BBC2 CHINATOWN PROGRAMME. Maudlin and negative.

What do people think about this series?

seems to present Chinese people living in Britain as weak and as victims.
The overall maudlin feel to the show is frankly depressing.
The chippie owners being bullied in Basildon - a story that only seems to advertise that chinese chippies are vulnerable to yobs.

I have problems with this programme Why doesn't
It doesn't focus on any success stories? what was the aim of bbc2?

Chinese are statistucally the most academic achievers!
This programme just focused on the poor and uneducated.

I suppose its important to show to the wider British community that Chinese people do have 'issues' that are specific to them - Chinese people are always portrayed as assililating law abiding citizens who bow their heads and accept everything that happens to them.

On the other hand - I agree with you that BBCs should be portrayed in a positive light. we are doing many positive things that are often overlooked.

Mind you the portrayal of the affluent Chinese guy in the earlier episode was pretty embarassing and gross. he was shot flying his own private jet over to France to have lunch with his mate.

Pretty embarassing and excessive I think, demostrates the 'show off' nature of Chinese that I can live without!
