Hi,

I didn't have to pay my wifes' family anything although they stayed with us when we got married as they came over from Taiwan. My parents paid for some of the wedding, I paid for the rest and organised the whole thing.

Infact her parents gave us red envelopes when they left - we kept them for cny and gave them back :o)

I did say to my wife that I wanted to go back to Taiwan to ask her dad if I could marry her. They both laughed - so I guess that it depends on how open each family is. Paying for a wife (dowry) is generally frowned upon these days as it often results in exploitation (Not always) of the women involved. For some less caring families women have been sold to the highest bidder and I'm not just talking about Chinese culture.
