Hi all

I am Chinese and married to an Englishman. We are wondering if Chinese superstitions in particular with numbers get in the way of your decision making in everyday life?

i.e. Do you avoid getting the number 14 bus just in case something bad happens? Do you have to get that 38388 number plate? How does that affect/influence the people around you especially if they are not Chinese and don't understand?

This is part of my research at University therefore will be grateful to hear your stories. Have you or known cases where numbers has had an effect on your luck one way or other?

Is it the older Chinese generations that believe and superstitions are generally fading away nowadays?

So many questions!!

Looking forward to hearing your replies!

Good numbers to you all

still am superstitious about the no 4 and avoiding it but 14 is a lucky number for me!
8 of course is very good for Chinese people and we ppick it when we have the opportunity.
Mostly I do it for a bit of fun rather than totally beleiving in it though

I'm sure most people take things like lucky numbers with a pinch of salt, if taking the no 14 bus home was your only choice, it would be even worse to avoid getting on it and walking home!

something i found off the metro newspaper website:

The luckiest baby in the world?
Sunday, July 8, 2007

She was born at 7.57pm on the seventh day in the seventh month of the seventh year of the Millennium.

And what's more – she was born in delivery room seven is her parents' seventh child.

When it comes to omens, they don't come luckier than little Elizabeth Elie.

Proud parents Serge and Herbethe Elie are naturally in seventh heaven after her arrival at Birmingham's appropriately named Good Hope Hospital.

'I hope she's a good luck charm when she grows up and wins us lots of money on the lottery, bingo or the horses,' said Land Rover worker Mr Elie, 37.

'There's sevens everywhere, this must be a good omen; it's a gift from God.'

Elizabeth arrived back at the family on Sunday where she met her six brothers and sisters Daniel, 14, Sagesse, 11, Jockebed, six, Jemima, two, and nine-year-old twins Doracs and Enis.

Mrs Elie, 35, said: 'We were aware Elizabeth was due on this special date but to be delivered at that time and in that room is just absolutely incredible.

'Serge and I already feel like the luckiest parents in the world but to have our seventh child born on this day is brilliant.'

Midwife Emma Whapples said: 'I think number seven will be her lucky number for life. It's an amazing coincidence and a little bit spooky.'

I know people talk about lucky 7 but it may not be for Chinese tradition. For years I have avoided as much as I could, for example, when serving a meal, I never make 7 dishes becuase I remember, only a funeral meal comes in 7 dishes. I avoid things amount to 7, e.g, if I have to buy a few cakes, I buy either 6 or 8, not 7. However, I will not let this things to affect major decisions though.

Again, 3 and 8 are lucky numbers only because they rhyme with Cantonese pronounciation. People from other regions of China did not think much about it. Of course, good omen spread far, anything brings good luck will be welcome. Even a coffin is a good symbol because it is called 'goon choy', and 'choy' rhymes with a word means money.

p.s. sorry I have not been in touch for sometime, things are not going quiet smooth, I still have lots of trouble, will try to catch up as much as I can.
