In case anybody is not aware, if you are a UK tax payer donate through the Chinese embassy account, they will NOT be able to reclaim your income tax.
However, if you donate via the British Red Cross or Oxfam, they will be able to reclaim your income tax.
Please note this fact while donating. It can add at least 25% to the amount you donate (if you are a 20% taxpayer).
The Chinese embassy does not make this fact clear and I only found this information after ringing them. Personally I think the embassy could help more people by directing people to donate to established UK charities rather than doing a DIY job. |
