We are currently starting production on The Parent Trap and would like to spread the word across the Chinese community.

The Parent Trap is a series of 6 observational documentaries looking at the relationship between young adults (25-35) and their parents. The show will examine the differences between the two generations in fields such as world view, life experiences, life styles, expectations and everyday life.

Each programme will follow a family as the parents come and spend a week living their son/daughter’s life. They will have to move in with their son/daughter and live with them for a week according to his/her rules.

We filmed a pilot before Christmas which was aired on BBC3 in February as part of their season on Families. It followed a young Green party member and his parents for a week. It was very informative, sweet and funny. Over the course of the week the parents realised that they knew very little of their son’s everyday life and got to find out what it was that he did at work, what he did with his friends when they spent time together and what his dreams and hopes were. In the meantime, the son came to realise that his parents’ more conservative opinions had been forged by a very different life to his own rather than by narrow mindedness.

The programme led to a deeper understanding between the family members and was fascinating to watch. In the upcoming series we are hoping to approach a wide range of situations in order to explore the main family issues and maybe bridge the generation gap.

We are currently looking for 6 families of different backgrounds for the upcoming series. We plan to start filming towards the end of May beginning of June. We would be filming for a week which each family. We are hoping that each family will illustrate an aspect of the differences between young adults and their parents: cultural, ideological, financial, lifestyle…

We would love to make a film with a young second generation Chinese adult and his more traditional parents – the parents could be based in the UK as well or still living in the home land – in which case the contrast between the two generation would be mainly one of lifestyle. It seems that such a film has not yet been made and would be fascinating and instructive.

If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please get in touch: sophie.gozlan@northonetv.com.

Many thanks,
Sophie
