Hello all,

Just need to get this out. I have just returned from a visit to Amsterdam and had a lovely time but for one minor incident which left quite a bad taste.

I was outside the Rijks museum and was about to try out the famous dutch delicacy of marinated herrings. The stall i aproached is just to the right of the museum and is one of the more well known places to sample this delicacy. I watched the locals tucking in and preceded to order a portion. I was told quite fimly that he was sold out. The man did not look like he was telling to truth as he would not make any eye contact with me. Thought nothing more of it and went off to visit the Van Gogh museum.

After all those canvases I was quite peckish and thought I would try a crab sandwich from the same stall. I thought I was in luck as I saw more locals tucking into the herrings. Before I could ask the chap looked away dismisively and said firmly that he had sold out of herrings. I was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable with his treatment and manner but I thought I would give him the benefit of doubt and order the crab sandwich. He immediately said that would be 9 euros (that will be £7 for a sandwich from a hawker stall!). The menu plainly said it was 4Eur 50 cents! Well with that I got the message and went away.

That incident was the first time I felt discriminated against since I was a schoolboy. Quite a shocking experience that left me feeling angry and wanting to seek further comfirmation of his abuse in order to get retribution. Of course, I did not and eventually carried on enjoying my holiday.

Strange to have come across such treatment in such a liberal city. The stallholder may have been protecting his regulars from seafood craving tourists. Give the stall a try next time you are there and see if you get the same treatment. Anyway I can highly recommend the place for a short break, the china town was OK enough for me a get a fix of roast duck after the drought of living in Germany but I could not find a nice place for dim sum.

This is very strange. Anyone have any ideas why this attitude exists?? I thought Holland was known for its liberal and accepting attitudes?

>>>>Anyone have any ideas why this attitude exists??<<<<

Because some people are racist scum........ (an irrational lash out on my part <g>)

Some people fear diversity for they are so weak and inadequate themselves they cannot cope with what they percieve as competition.... Anything different and beyond the obscene limits of their culpably limited understanding. For such narrow minds cannot conceive of or bear the enormity of thie earth... Or the prospects of looking beyond their horizons....

Let alone begin to embrace it's beauty and wonders....
