After decades of military dictatorship, the people of Burma are rising – and they need our help. Marches begun by monks and nuns have snowballed, bringing hundreds of thousands to the streets. Now the crackdown has begun...

When the Burmese last marched in 1988, the military massacred thousands. But if the world stands up and supports their struggle, this time they could succeed. We'll send our petition to United Nations Security Council members (including the dictatorship's main backer China) and to media at the UN, while also alerting the Burmese to our support:

When I was brought up in HK my Chinese family always taught me not to waste food. And I'm even more puzzled with the second sentence. Laughing

I place hope in China's influence than rousing the populace to revolt.

There is already a road map to democracy. It just needs the right conditions to get started.

China's influence on Korea & Sudan are already looking very hopeful.

China already mostly owns Burma. The PRC has tremendous influence there. If they wish to use influence in constructive way is difficult to say.

When I was in Beijing shortly after the North Korean "Nuclear" test the general concensus among officials I met was the "weapon" didnt work and North Koreans had achieve what was thought impossible. That of actually failing to detonate 13 kilos of Uranium. It was also felt that the North Koreans had become an embarassment and was general concern that America might do something "rash" and a sense of China having to act.

There is also strong view in China that re-unification of Koreas would be commercial benefit to China. Just as cost of reunification was cripple to Germany, the cost would remove South Korea as commercial competitor to China for a generation.

The US is now involved, so it looks like China is constructively involved.

British investment in Burma: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/7014096.stm

Britain has not banned UK companies from investing in or trading with Burma, but has been quick to point the finger to the Chinese.

Latest news is that 'Burma shuts down comms to the outside world' p://www.guardian.co.uk/burma/story/0,,2186651,00.html

The consciousness of the US government is made up of many people with many different spheres of interests. It cannot be thought of as an individual in any way.

I do think the US machinery is approaching international politics in a more rational way.
