| I sure don't appreciate your patronising tone eye_candy! I'm not whitewashed or brainwashed. I feel free to pick and choose whatever interests or fascinates me at any given time. It's not subject to anyone else's opinions or what is "in" at the time - I am not so little that I am incapable of forming my own opinion. I find your view disturbing - the attitude of yours sounds racist and culturally prejudiced to me. I'm interested to know what you class as "whitewashing" and evidence of this. Care to elaborate? |

If you whitewashed as thinking like a english person and trying to be one.
Yes, i do that. I wasn't born in this country and there is a lot I don't like. I don't feel chinese at all, i feel english even though i don't look like one and yes i ahve receivered my share of racism every day when younger.
My next door neighbours are chinese, from china, studying here, and yes I do look down on them. Why? because they seem so provincial to me, they amke no efforts to improve their english, they stick to themselves, create a little sub culture, and act as if nothing is different.
And i know plenty of chinese or eurasians who act as i do. You can either accept the fact that you live in a country where you stick out and try and blend in or hide away in chinese only communties, reinforcing your own negative views of england. |

I'm half chinese, and frankly if all full chinese are like you, i'd rather not be associated with you.

Can you please list what qualities a person must have to NOT be whitewashed i.e. 'true Chinese', in your opinon.
Please be specific. _________________ Isn't it time you joined?

sp,
I dont like whitewashed ethnic people who subscribe to the dominant ideology through media and peer groups. This extends to every kind of ethnic group. The best example would be successful black professionals that are disowned from their community from 'selling out'. They have betterd themselves through education but than distance used to themselves from the people they to be.
'uncle toms', 'bananas' etc are some of the labels used for these people.
By this token, I equally hate those that stick only to their own race. A good example would be BBC's that meet at uni and only talk to other chinese or BBC's and no one else. They also tend to discriminate if you dont come from HK or dont speak cantonese as good as them even though youre not of cantonese origins.
From my experience, there are very few chinese like myself. I have chinese friends but most of my friends are non chinese. I tend to find BBC's 'choose' either to be white or chinese or black/indian but find it hard to mix with many different cultural groups. |

All you've described so far is what you are against. I am asking what you are 'pro'.
What is this correct Chinese lifestyle that you are advocating? What does it consist of?
You say you hate whitewashed people and you also hate those who only talk to other Chinese. You must therefore have an idea in your head of what the 'correct Chinese lifestyle' is, otherwise you would not know what to hate and what to be against.
So I ask you, what is the 'correct Chinese lifestyle' that you think people should follow?
Describe how you think people need to live in order to comply with your formula for not being whitewashed.
What ethnicity friends should they have? What ethnicity partner should they have? Where should they socialise? What and where should they eat? What should their family life be like?
Let's hear you checklist for being a Chinese person and not being whitewashed. _________________ Isn't it time you joined?

Obviously we all have different experiences and I am genuinely sorry to hear yours have been so negative. Mine have been very different. I have quite a few BBC friends and used to spend a good deal of time in their company (sadly business commitments have eaten away at our social life of late).
If you follow the link at the bottom of sp's posts you will find a site where events are organised that positively encourage people of all races and backgrounds to get involved. I think sp will bear me out on this, but I reckon we have met with people of just about every race you could think of through this group.
My wife also found that not coming from HK or speaking great cantonese caused some Chinese at Uni to exclude her. But she assumes that it was as much about their lack of confidence about their English as anything else. Nonetheless, despite her being from Malaysia our circle of Chinese friends include people from all over the world.
You should try going to some of the British Chinese Society events, you will find people very welcoming. |

I also would like to know the answers to these questions.
People are generally the same wherever they're from. Is there REALLY a "white"way and a "Wong" way ? |
