Beijing Suspends Licenses of 2 Lawyers Who Offered to Defend Tibetans in Court
BEIJING — Two prominent human rights lawyers have lost their licenses after volunteering to defend Tibetans charged in the violent anti-China protests that erupted in March. The decision comes as Chinese authorities are tightening scrutiny over dissidents in advance of the Olympics in August.
The two lawyers, Teng Biao and Jiang Tianyong, are known for taking on politically contentious cases, including those alleging official abuses of human rights. Reached on Tuesday night, Mr. Teng said he learned last week that judicial authorities had renewed the license of every lawyer in his firm, except his own.

I'm getting rather tired of hearing nothing but criticisms coming from the UK and it saddens me every time and continually makes me more ashamed of the country I was born in.
Apart from numerous examples littered over the news websites, one that comes to my mind is the Olympic Opening Ceremony itself. I watched it live here on CCTV and was completely blown away by it. Absolutely awesome show all round, and it almost felt (afterwards) like there had been a huge burden of anxiety lifted from everywhere here and replaced by relief and pride - especially given the great lengths so many have gone to to ensure the Olympics is a success.
Yet, a couple of days later (out of curiosity - and hoping for different camera work and different angles) I downloaded and watched the BBC broadcasted version. It seemed that at every possibly opportunity the commentators felt it necessary to keep dampening the harmony and richness of the show by constantly bringing up and making mention of the cultural revolution, opium wars, Tibet, and environmental issues. All this un-helpful information and these unpleasant reminders drowning out the delightful musical score in the background. I was appalled and incredibly disheartened.
I was also exceedingly surprised not to see Gordon Brown at the opening ceremony.. I'm not sure of the reason why he wasn't and I can only assume (as it appears from here) that it was a political boycott - despite all the government responses denouncing the altercations during the torch relay claiming that the political stage and the Olympics should not be confused. Shameful really.
On the flip side however - I have noticed that unlike back in England where the BBC would pay tribute to the gold medalists by actually including their national anthems at awards ceremonies when covering the events, here in China, the coverage only goes as far as the national anthem for events where China actually got gold. hehe and there have been a lot of them so far - May there be plenty more to come.

This is a clear cultural difference which is viewed differently by people in China and the UK.
I question the Chinese government where possible with the hope of that it will improve in the future, indeed this is my perspective of the press- in order to not only provide information about current affairs but also hold any government accountable for their actions. In my opinion, if I stand in front of a mirror and just concentrate on my good points, I will improve much slower than if I look for problems. It is often a misconception that my motives for wanting the government to improve are really just based on wanting to degrade the government. I think this is the same reason the BBC also looks for problems in other governments (look how much it finds problems in the UK!....there is certainly more criticisms about Britain than China...but everyone forgets this when some bad news is mentioned about China).
My Chinese wife on the other hand focuses on the positive aspects of the Chinese government where possible in the hope that they will continue to show more positive aspects in the future.
From what I can see, the motives for my wife and I are the same: we both seek improvement in a certain system, however, our belief in the methods for achieving such motives are very different.
I question with the hope of growing. My wife supports with the hope of growing. |

The BBC coverage this Olympics reveals the deep colonial and crusading attitudes which lay just under surface of english society. It is the mentality of the bully.
Just as China was forced to import opium to subjugate the population, UK today is pursuing domination and advancement of its own values and culture by every modern means. In contrast, China has always and is pursuing a live and let live co-existence in harmony policy.
The Olympics is over, but the Cold War will be in full swing. |

The BBC/UK a bully!?..haha...We couldn't bully our way out of a paper bag... We will leave that to "want-to-be" supper powers with their state controlled media;)

Very true point, a large proportion of the upper class of Victorian society were notorious drug addicts...alas, they discovered this from Chinese emperors and warlords who were busy arguing about which part of China belong to them!

It is this type of talk which Chinese government hopes other countries will keep quiet about human rights, freedom of press etc issues. Basically saying, if something happens in your own country then every other country should ignore it... I'm sure the Burmese government, Saddam Hussein, Hitler etc would agree. If I hear about Child abuse in my next door neighbours house, no one should interferer...please. It is any persons common duty as a human being, to protect those who can not protect themselves, to give a voice to those who are being silenced, regardless of the piece of land they are on. The way certain Chinese are talking you would think they are a different species!

Thank God this is only happening in certain peoples minds. Though dedicated ex-communist-cold-war propaganda departments attempting to lock nations in ignorance and discredit other media criticisms are still very tangible
Personally, I'm waiting for the next Chairman Mao to overthrow the existing regime... |
