Earthquake”, which measured at 8.3 Mw according to Chinese Earthquake Administration (CEA),
and 7.9 Mw according to USGS, occurred at 14:28:01.42 CST (06:28:01.42 UTC) on 12 May 2008 in
Sichuan province of China. It was also known as the Wenchuan earthquake, after the earthquake

’s
epicenter in Wenchuan County, Sichuan province. The epicenter was 80 kilometres (50 mi)
west-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, with a depth of 19 kilometres (12 mi).
The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing (1,500 kilometres (932 mi) away) and Shanghai
(1,700 kilometres (1,056 mi) away), where office buildings swayed with the tremor. The
earthquake was also felt in nearby countries.

Official figures (as of July 6, 2008 12:00 CST) state that 69,197 are confirmed dead,
including 68,636 in Sichuan province, and 374,176 injured, with 18,340 listed as missing.
The earthquake left about 4.8 million people homeless, though the number could be as high as
11 million. It is the deadliest and strongest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan
earthquake, which killed at least 240,000 people. Approximately 15 million people lived in the
affected area.

On May 25, a major aftershock of 6.0 Mw hit northeast of the original earthquake’s epicenter,
in Qingchuan County, causing eight deaths, 1000 injuries, and destroying thousands of

buildings.
On May 27, two more major aftershocks, a 5.2 Mw in Qingchuan County and a 5.7 Mw in Ningqiang

in
Shanxi Province, led to the collapse of more than 420,000 homes and injured 63 people.

When the earthquake happened, I was in Xian Tao Vocational College at Hubei provience. We had

just
in class, suddendly,I felt a little dizzy. At first, I don’t know what happened ,then all of

my
classmates felt dizzy, too. And I noticed that the funs hanging from the ceiling were
swaying.”Earthquake!” someone shouted abruptly! And all of us began to dash out the

classroom
to the square in front of the teaching building. And there were already many students and

teachers
there, who were talking about the breathtaking experience.

This was the first time I experience an earthquake in my life.
After the earthquake,President Hu Jintao announced that the disaster response would be rapid.
Just 90 minutes after the earthquake, Premier Wen Jiabao, who has an academic background in
geomechanics, flew to the earthquake area to oversee the work.

The next couple of weeks, the earthquake became a nationwide topic. The processing of rescuing
the people suffering the disaster pulled all chinese people’s heart strings. Almost all of

the
Chinese enterprises, State Organs , all kinds of orginations and individuals tried their

best
to help the people suffering the disaster. And every Chinese people expressed their deep grief
to the victims in the earthquake.

The State Council declared a three-day period of national mourning for the earthquake victims
starting from May 19, 2008; the PRC’s National Flag and Regional Flags of Hong Kong SAR and

Macau
SAR were raised at half mast. It is the first time that a national mourning period had been
declared for something other than the death of a state leader, and many call it the biggest
display of mourning since the death of Mao. At 14:28 CST on May 19, 2008, a week after the
earthquake, the Chinese public held a moment of silence. People stood silent for three minutes
while air defense, police and fire sirens, and the horns of vehicles, vessels and trains

sounded.
Cars on Beijing’s roads came to a halt. The Ningbo Organizing Committee of Beijing Olympic
torch relay announced that the relay would be suspended for the duration of the mourning

period.

During the rescuing, I was moved by many people and many stories. I even can’t remember how

many
times I shed tears when I saw the views of the remains of the earthquake and many affecting
stories from the TV and the internet. I have seen a mother who was died, but her baby was stil
alive in her embrace, and there was a mobilephone in one of her hand, which showed a edited
short message said“ Baby, if you can alive, you must remember, Mom always love you.” When
rescuers rescued the baby from this mother, all of them cried. During that time, there were so
many stories like this. And every times, I can’t help crying.Until now, the earthquake has

past
for a long time. But, every time I recall these stories, there is still tears shine in my

eyes.I bought something on http://www.easyfoybuy.com for them

Chinese people have shown great solidarities in front of the big disaster. Now, The
rebuilding
of the earthquake area is going forward in the orderly way with the help of the Goverment and
the people from all over the country and even all over the world. I believe there will be a
new
town stand on the ruins of the earthquake, soon. Let’s pray for the people who suffered the
disaster together!God bless China!
