We've all heard about "going for a Chinese" but how would "going for a Jewish" look like in the media? Would popbitch or Ann Winterton pull a similar gag when it comes to the Jewish community?
We probably would never know, not because Jewish takeaways are not that common. Not because Jewish people aren't the butt of racist jokes. It seems that the media and so on would pick on some race but leave the others.
Is it because:
Media people and others are more cautious when it comes to anti-Jewish racism?
Or because Jewish people are better organised when it comes to taking action against offence to them?
Or because, in the case of the Chinese, we are more tolerant, more ignorant, or whatever, and we tend not to respond as some others would, giving the media and cheap-thrill racists opportunities for a cheap target?
Or it is something else you would like to comment on? |

No, I don't think it has anything to do with the Chinese being more tolerant.
If the victims had been Indian Winterton would have said "going to morcambe for an Indian".
"Going for a Jewish wouldn't make sense" Brits don't generally eat "Jewish" food whereas we Brits do commonly go for a chinese, Indian, Greek, Thai, etc etc. meal. |

Morecambe briefly aside, Winterton has her repertoire of racist non-jokes, and the one she was caught at had her telling one about Pakistanis at "10 a penny". Jewish food may not be as common, "going for a Jewish" may not "work" with Morecambe but as a distinct group, Jewish people have their share of attacks - what I am driving at is why are people in media and politics more wary about having a go at Jewish people?
I tend to think that Jewish people are better organised at giving it back as good or better! And, indeed, we do find fast and grovelling apologies very frequent.
What say you all? |

I think that people are a lot more reluctant to voice Anti Semetic views generally simply because of the terrible consequences of Anti Semitism in Europe over the last few hundred years.
Although I think bigotry is bigotry no matter who the victim, the holocaust has left deep scars on the Euopean Psyche and that was merely the last in a long line of porgroms aimed at the jews.
Nonetheless I do think that the Chinese could do a lot more than they do to challenge racism aimed at themselves. I'd like to see the Chinese here more politicised. |
