Is the WKW Grandmaster IP Man film finally happening?
HK Cinema

Many may remember way back when director Wong Kar Wai announced that he would shoot a Grandmaster IP Man film with actor Tony Leung Chui Wai in the lead as Bruce Lee's master. However, as the years passed other things arose and the film was pushed to the side. This past year producer Raymond Wong along with director Wilson Yip and actor Donnie Yen created their own film about the kung fu master and therefore were entangled in a battle with WKW over the title Grandmaster IP Man.

It seems that Wong Kar Wai has won the feud and will indeed keep the title while Raymond Wong and his team will settle simply for IP Man. In a handful of recent newsbreaks from Hong Kong, Wong Kar Wai claims that his film will finally go underway with shooting scheduled for March or April 2009.

Time will only tell whether or not this will finally happen. At least, we can all cross our fingers.

Last week saw the UK release of the recent bone-crunching Thai ass-kicker Chocolate, which is the latest from the Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew. The UK release from Cine Asia - on both DVD and Blu-ray - includes the original language soundtrack as well as a bunch of Special Features including three featurettes, storyboards, theatrical and teaser trailers.
Cine Asia themselves have just launched their new website to promote their new and upcoming films - including forthcoming release of the Donnie Yen actioner An Empress And The Warriors. Take a look at the site here.

Other UK releases announced for the new year include two highly anticipated titles from Third Window Films - Memories of Matsuko and Kamikaze Girls, both arriving on January 12th, 2009. Specs for Memories of Matsuko are currently a 5.1 soundtrack, a thirty minute 'Making of' featurette and a 'Film to Storyboard' comparison. The Kamikaze Girls disc will include interviews with the cast and a trailer.

Rinko Kikuchi seems to be busy signing contracts of late. The budding actress will next work with Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet, who last directed the Penelope Cruz starrer Elegy, on her new film entitled Map Of The Sounds Of Tokyo.

The Oscar nominated actress will lead the cast as a Japanese woman living two lives as both a Tokyo fish market worker and a contract killer. Spanish actor Sergi Lopez, known by most as the evil Captain Vidal in Pan's Labyrinth, will play a wine business owner who is the next person she is hired to kill.

Not unlike the recently announced Japanese remake of Sideways also starring Rinko Kikuchi, Map Of The Sounds Of Tokyo will contain both Japanese and English spoken throughout.

The film is set to begin principal photography on November 16th in Tokyo, Japan before moving to Barcelona for its six week shoot.

In the last decade, Hollywood has been taking cues from Japanese cinema. Now it is Japan's turn.

Director Cellin Gluck, who has worked on blockbuster films in the US as well as in Japan, is currently shooting a Japanese remake of Sideways once again in the Napa Valley of California. Fumiyo Kohinata is taking over the Paul Giamatti lead while Katsuhisa Namase, Rinko Kikuchi and Kyoka Suzuki round out the cast.

A few tweaks to the plot now brings the Kohinata character to the US to attend the wedding of his good friend, played by Namase, who now resides in America. The supporting actors are said to be American with both Japanese and English spoken throughout the film.

What happens when we cross the fantasy life of celebrity with the harshness of reality? Is the action star still a hero, or just an ordinary man dealing with life’s daily struggles? JCVD, the newest release from Peace Arch and brought to the screen by Gaumont, Samsa Film, Artemis Productions, and RTBF hits theatres in a limited release on November 7th.

This unique perspective on the false relationship between a celebrity and the public is explored in a story that combines reality with fantasy and comedy with drama, all in the exciting, gripping genre of hostage/cop films.

First up in our latest reviews we take a look at Alexandre Aja’s recent remake of the Korean flick Into The Mirror, the Kiefer Sutherland vehicle Mirrors. So is it any good, or is it just another lazy Hollywood rehash? Déjan gives us the lowdown:

‘Essentially, MIRRORS follows the trend of Americanizing the Asian horror films: Eastern subtlety, slow rhythm and suggestiveness are replaced by the faster, more aggressive and spectacular effects – but, at least in this case, such an approach improves the original.’

Then we take a perusal at a new book by Jim Harper with our review of Flowers From Hell: The Modern Japanese Horror Film:

‘Flowers from Hell may not be as thorough and detailed as some might want, but, on the other hand, those looking for a brief, simple, down-to-earth introduction to a phenomenon much more complex than here presented will be pleased by the user-friendly approach taken here.’

Finally we take a look at directors Chee Keong Cheung’s recent British tournament flick Underground:

‘The low budget of UNDERGROUND means that there's no CGI trickery, and not even any noticeable wirework. The beauty of this is that UNDERGROUND relies on the skills of it's actors – several of whom (including Mark Strange, Nathan Lewis, Liang Yang and Beau Fowler) are pretty good on-screen fighters.’
