PUBLIC FORUM Venue: Fieldon House Entrance, House of Lords, 13 Little College Street, London SW1P 3SH TUESDAY 21ST JUNE 2005 Time: 3pm to 5pm Confirmed speakers so far: Sir Herman Ouseley, Lord Bikhu Parekh, Jabez Lam, Hsio Hung Pai, Suresh Grover and victims of race attacks including Eileen Jia, partner of Mr Mi Gao Huang Chen, killed in Wigan in April 2005. The murder of Mr Chen outside his Chinese take-away in Wigan two months ago has sent shockwaves amongst the Chinese community in UK. The Chinese community is also angered at the perverse arrest of Mr Chen’s partner, Eileen Jia, for attempting to defend her self and Mr Chen from an unprovoked, pre-meditated, brutal and overwhelming attack. The 41-year-old Chinese man died after an attack involving over 30 youths carrying a spade, a tree branch, metal pipes and other offensive weapons. Nineteen white teenagers have been arrested; six since charged with murder. Prior to the incident in April, Mr Chen’s takeaway was a target of perpetual harassment and racial abuse. Min Quan, a Chinese-led branch of The Monitoring Group, has been warning authorities of both the growing level and propensity of racially motivated violence against the Chinese community. Yet its concerns have neither been acknowledged nor addressed properly. As a result the Chinese community, spread across the UK, remains vulnerable and isolated prone to daily harassment and attack and, in cases such as Eileen Jia, stigmatised and facing a criminal charge for daring to defend themselves. The forum will hear from Parliamentarians, community activists and victims on how to acknowledge, address and challenge the growing problem.
