* Manchester Chinese protest at racial attacks in FMD scapegoating
* Demonstration and letter to Tony Blair
Representatives of Manchester Chinese community will meet MP Tony Lloyd
tomorrow and present a petition to to be delivered to Tony Blair in protest
at the recent scapegoating of the Chinese in the foot-and-mouth disease
(FMD) outbreak.
The petition will highlight anger in the North-west Chinese community
over loss of trade, attacks and abuse resulting from unfounded media reports
blaming Chinese catering for FMD. Following a vicious racist assault in
Essex - when a Chinese takeaway worker was himself arrested - the delegation
will request priority response from police when attacks are reported.
On Monday 23 April, a demonstration starts at 2.30pm from Chinatown, Charlotte
Street, to Manchester Town Hall, with all restaurants and shops closing
in joint protest from 2.30 to 4pm.
The Manchester Police are invited to receive their copy of the petition
at the door step of the Town Hall.
