In a recent letter to Ken Livingstone, Yuansong Jiang, the Counsellor and Cosul General to the Chinese Embassy in London, added his voice to an increasing number of people who are protesting Brent’s go ahead for the redevelopment of Oriental City in London.

He joins former England international and TV pundit Ian Wright who recently delivered letters of protest to the London Mayor in a bid to prevent the redevelopment. The ex Arsenal star said "It really would be a disgrace if this place was pulled down and the guys who work there had nowhere else to go."

Brent Council has given permission for the scheme despite claims that redevelopment will result in a loss of 800 jobs. The proposal will also require many small businesses to relocate for up to two years, which could force them out of business.

In his letter, Jiang highlighted that ‘Oriental City has become the second Chinatown in London, thanks to the hard working of Oriental ethnic groups’.

He expressed his ‘deep concern to the plan which has negative impact on so many Chinese families,’ as well as ‘great sympathy for the tenants whose businesses would be affected if the proposed development goes ahead without modification.’

Despite Development Securities claim to have extensively consulted tenants, Jiang called for a ‘win-win program and take the benefit of the tenants into consideration’.

Edwina Lee - Oriental City: Customer loyalt Posted 19:29 on 16 February 2007
This news is a mixed blessing. I'm sure lots of people don't even know about the existence of the Oriental City until now. Now I know and I'll be there Chinese New Year.

Oriental City, 399, Edgeware Road, London NW9

There should be a Pledge Campaign to get customers to pledge to remain loyal to the businesses in transition, so that they follow the businesses when they move back to the newly built Oriental City.
