It is nice to see a British website with a predorminantly yellow outlook. However I cannot help but notice how much of a cliche some of the issues raised were. They were so 'joy-luck-club'. It's always "Oh I am a East-West hybrid. I am neither here nor there" or "Don't stereotype me. I don't know kungfu." Admittedly, these are real issues faced by many BBCs but to recycle these 'done-to-death' themes over again is to introduce a whole new category of stereotypes - that of a victimised identity-explorer caught between 2 cultures. Instead, more articles should focus on us tackling less macro-issues such as what-to-do, who-to-date and where-to-eat woes. By downplaying the big operatic East v.s West theme and highlighting light hearted stuff that make up our everyday lives, I feel more can be learnt about our culture and who we are. Afterall it is always the little things that make up the collective Asian voice - and I want our voice to be best remembered as being sharp, funny and intelligent, not "Help! I am a banana." |
