In what we expect to be an apology to the Chinese community for the article by Charles Campion entitled "Chop Phooey" published by the Daily Mail on the 7th August 2002, the "Why Charles Campion Is Wrong" Campaign, report that a "Balancing Article" is to appear in the Daily Mail on Friday 20th December. The campaign, headed by Chinese Take Away Association, the UK Chinese Catering Association and the Chinese in Britain Forum, sought to draw attention to the belief that the article was both factually incorrect, and racially biased. Co-organiser Anna Chen said, "Without accurate depictions of us in the culture, any idiot can come along and project whatever they want on to us. And, in this case, they have." A small delegation of representatives from the campaign went to the Daily Mail offices, but were refused entry. Subsequently the Executive Editor, Robin Esser, met with two of the campaign co-ordinators to discuss ways of repairing the damage caused by this article. In discussions, Robin Esser described the article "at best biased, and at worst xenophobic". Campaign organisers worked with the journalist, Charles Sharr Murray, providing background information, reference materials and comment. Charles Sharr Murray had a free hand to write whatever he chose, in the belief that he would present a truthful account. Whether the final article is what was hoped for is yet to be seen - this will depend on how the Daily Mail edits the article. Dimsum hopes that this will serve as a positive step to promote the Chinese catering industry in a positive light.
