East Asians in the Media on the Rise?

In the recent months, We have been plagued by a number of reality dance shows. Not a usual dance fan (I have two left feet!) a few of these have caught my eye, and this is because I am seeing a lot East Asian talents emerge.

2009’s ‘Move like Michael Jackson’, on BBC3 showed us the talents of British-filipino talent in the form of the Animaineax. A dance crew consisting of 4 close friends from Milton Keynes. They won the show and won the chance to be part of a MJ tribute concert organised by Jermaine Jackson. This year we see ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ hit our saturday primetimes, featuring Mark Calape from Animaineax try out for another dance title. But he wasn’t the only East Asian that hit the spotlight, Gavin Tsang also took part as the final 14. At the same time, Sky is also airing another dance contest, ‘Got to Dance’, presented by Davina McCall. One of the contestants in the Final is a certain young man-Matthew Koon, 15 year old talent, and many of you may know him to be the first asian Billy Elliot. Koon is currently one of the favourites to win the contest. In addition, if we look back across 2009/2010, who can forget the young filipino singers from X-Factor: Trucolorz (dropped out because one of the contestants were too young.) Moving away from reality shows, we have CBBC’s Spirit Warriors, featuring a number of amazing British East Asian actors.

This is only a snippet of what I have noticed, and I’m sure there’s a lot more examples in other forms of Media.

Are we finally moving out of the shadows and into mainstream media? (and not William Hung style!) (or you could argue back and tell me that we were never in the ‘shadows.’=))
