A new study entitled “Ethnic Diversity and Dynamics in the Housing Market” funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and based at the Geography Department in Kings College London is examining the housing histories and aspirations of four ethnic minority groups (Chinese, Black Caribbean, Black African and Indian) in East London and Leicester. The research aims to shed light on the ways in which ethnicity might influence the hopes and the goals that people have about their housing and the likelihood of these goals becoming reality. A final report, to be published by Joseph Rowntree at the end of 2007, aims to contribute to current housing debates and policy.

The project is based on in-depth interviews with people in different housing circumstances; from owner-occupiers to tenants in rented accommodation. It will also consider the impact of generational differences. The research team is therefore keen to contact both first and second-generation members of the British Chinese community.

The interviews will focus on people’s housing experiences, their perceptions of their local area, opinions about the housing market and their plans for the future. Interviews will last roughly one hour and can either take place at the participant’s home or at a convenient address. Any travel costs will be repaid by the research project. All information provided by participants will remain confidential and their personal details will not be identified in the final report.

If you live in Leicester or East London* and are willing to be interviewed, we would like to hear from you!
