Anna Chen I have just read the replies to C.L. Lind's ill-informed rant and was pleased to see my own feelings and thoughts reflected in Geoff Cockayne's letter and Jonathan Krause's passionate rebuttal. Jonathan's well-argued piece highlights all the contradictions in Lind's ramble. Many of Lind's points are gaining popular currency and, at a time when an increasing number of people are being attacked or even dying because of the colour of their skin, I'd like to thank Jonathan for challenging them in a way that was apt, effective and enormously entertaining. But Zhang Li Yun needs to get off his or her high horse from whose great height he/she is pissing out the demarcation of a nasty little turf war based on race, perhaps something even more nationalistic. Who made you gate-keeper for the Chinese community? So you think Jonathan is insulting? Try re-reading your own sweet offering with its skewed priorities. Personally, I welcome a lively debate when it is making a good point, and I'm not scared of an interesting turn of phrase when it is used to challenge ignorance such as the assumption that the UK is my "host country". And as for Lind's absurd assertion that there was "very little" in the media about FMD and the the Chinese, sure, if you discount front pages of The Times, The Mirror, The Guardian, plus the Express and who knows what horrors awaited us in The Sun. Oh, and GMTV, BBC and ITV local news, and Radio 4's PM ... Even the press now acknowledge that they went way over the top in their hysterical reporting (Guardian journalists say they've now "learnt our lesson") but Mr Lind hasn't bothered to keep up with events despite posting on probably the best source of information on this subject; Dimsum. Duhr! Neither is he part of an oppressed minority in the same way that non-white ethnic people living in Britain are, coming as he does from the dominant European white group that ran roughshod over the Third World under colonialism and now repeats the exercise under rampant global capitalism, so a stereotypical white male such as Mr Bean or the characters from Dad's Army (O dear! What do these examples say about Mr Lind?) carries a far different meaning from a stereotypical non-white person (minority). He also describes the UK Chinese community's efforts to fight back for once as "anti-white propaganda". I suppose he'd rather we all rolled over and played dead. I thought Jonathan was remarkably restrained under the circumstances. Mr/Ms Zhang should try to distinguish between gutter journalism and a gutsy critique, and please have something useful to say rather than just taking a pop at people who do have that ability. Passion. Solidarity. Humour. Get used to it, Sourpuss. Even better, try acquiring any of the above. |
