Monday 23 April 2001

Today, the Chinese community in the Northwest will show their outrage at the false foot and mouth allegations in a protest in Manchester. At 2:30pm, up to 200 members of the Chinese community will march from Chinatown to the town hall and present a letter of their concerns to Tony Lloyd MP. Chinese businesses will close in support between 2:30-4:30pm.

Reports in the press first appeared on 26 March alleging that foot and mouth disease entered the country via a Chinese restaurant that was smuggling in infected meat. This story snowballed in other papers starting wild allegations of infected monkey meat, antelope nostrils and grubs being served up in Chinese restaurants. As a result, catering establishments have reported a drop of up to 40% in trade and an increase in racial harassment.

Amie Tsang, a member of the Manchester organising committee, told Dimsum that the demonstration was organised to highlight the deep concerns of the community in the Northwest and to raise awareness about the falseness of the allegations. The Northwest Chinese community will be reinforcing the demands of a recent similar protest in London organised by the Chinese Civil Rights Action Group UK. They will ask that the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF) identifies the person(s) who initially leaked the false allegation to the press, that Nick Brown MP deals with Chinese concerns swiftly, and that the police provides adequate protection against racial attacks.
